Set in a land bordering the Six Duchies, Robin Hobb begins her epic tale of pirates, talking ships, magic, sea serpents, slave revolts, dashing heroes and bloody battles. Wizardwood, the most precious commodity in the world, comes only from the Rain Wilds. But only a liveship can negotiate the perilous waters of the Rain Wild River, and liveships are hard to come by. They quicken only when three family members from successive generations have died upon their deck. The liveship Vivacia is about to undergo her quickening: Althea Vestrit waits for the ship that she loves more than anything in the world to awaken.

Over the years I have been asked time and time again for recommendations of female authors in the fantasy genre. Although there are many excellent female authors in the fantasy genre today, my go to answer is always Robin Hobb. There are few authors whom write beautiful prose the way that Hobb does while at the same time emotionally destroy you, as she is not very kind to her characters. In my humble opinion, The Liveship traders trilogy is the best example of Robin Hobbs work and it is my favorite series written by her. This series does take place in the Realm of the Elderlings world, but the series can absolutely be read on its own with little to no input from her other series. The Liveship Traders series revolves around the fortunes of the Vestrit family and their liveship Vivacia. A liveship is a ship made out of Wizardwood from the Rain Wilds and contains a magical substance, which gives the ship magical powers. The Vestrit family is still in debt to the Rain Wild Trader family from generations ago and the only way to trade with the Rain Wilds is on a liveship who can traverse the harsh seas. The story takes place in Bingtown, where political turmoil could lead to an all out war. The current leader of Jamailia has ignored promises his ancestors have made to the citizens of Bingtown causing outrage and unrest. Also, the threat and influence of Chalced with their slave trade is becoming more popular throughout the world. We follow several amazing characters throughout the series. The first one is Althea Vestrit, whom is heartbroken when her father Ephron dies on the liveship Vivacia. Althea is crestfallen when she learns that possession of Vivicia will not pass on to her but her older sister Keffria, who then gives control to her Chalcedean husband Kyle.

A liveship is a ship made partially out of wizardwood. Liveships are renowned for their sentience, which they achieve after three members of their family die aboard them. When the Rain Wild Traders began excavating the buried Elderling city of Frengong , they discovered what appeared to be logs inside a chamber. Splitting the logs revealed a pale carcass which the Traders discarded. The log material, which became known as wizardwood, proved undamaged by the acidic Rain Wild River , and was therefore immensely valuable. Each discovered log was used to create one liveship, with the exceptions of the two logs used to create the Paragon and the log that contained Tintaglia. Unbeknownst to the Traders, the logs were actually dragon cocoons, created from a combination of dragon saliva, river sediment, and dragon memories.

Literary allusions to the works of Robert Louis Stevenson and R. If a wizardwood ship sails with a family for three generations, and all 3 generations die on its deck, then it will awaken into a liveship. She managed to combine the gravitas and beauty of Tolkien, with the readability and digestibility that is common among modern fantasy. Stock: In stock. Her life is, simply put, boring. Hobb enjoys taking her time fleshing out all the characters, the locations and the world. He could smell the stench of their entrapment and hear their cries. The majority of characters in A Game of Thrones are AT BEST observers, and often not even good at that; all the characters especially viewpoint characters in Ship of Magic have agency: they are making things happen, everything they do affects the plot, the story. The first and most interesting thing I noticed while reading this book was the writing style. I enjoyed the first book of the Farseer trilogy. So far, Wintrow and Althea have had the worst luck.

The Liveship Trilogy series is a wonderful series of fantasy novels written by a renowned American writer named Robin Hobb.

I'm predicting that they are the way they are because of uhhh character development , and I can only hope it goes uphill from here. There's too many good ones out there waiting to be found. Preferably before babies and marriage, because she doesn't want to end up with an icky husband. Vivicia, a newly quickened ship, tried her best to bond with Wintrow but the boy always maintained his distance and soon there was a wall between them, and a lot of pain, sadness. I also really enjoyed the addition to the world she has created in Farseer. Over the years I have been asked time and time again for recommendations of female authors in the fantasy genre. Story follows three main characters Vivicia - the ship, Wintrow, and Althea. I had a difficult time getting used to these sudden switches initially but once I got to know the characters, the ride was smooth. So a 2 star from me means, yes, I liked the book, and I'd loan it to a friend and it went everywhere in my jacket pocket or purse until I finished it. It definitely isn't action packed, but emotionally it is so hard hitting. I have seen this technique used before, but normally I wind up patiently waiting for the new plot threads to evolve so I can transition back to the other characters that I am really interested in, all the while hoping these threads eventually merge.
