The Disability Discrimination Act is foundational legislation that covers areas like building regulations and public transport standards, all of which profoundly changed the ability for disabled people to live independently. She campaigned against the forced sterilisation of people with a disability and continued to break down barriers for many Australians. Throughout her life, Hasting taught what she calls the not-yet-disabled population about the importance of inclusion and ensuring disabled people have full rights and access to opportunities. With each person who comes to understand disability as a normal part of the human condition, Elizabeth Hastings legacy lives on.
