Let us also put the elephant in the room, as it were, on the table. It seems almost, forgive my infelicity, perverse not to point out that Lost Girls is the decade-long project of a strange bearded man who came to sleep with and marry the artist , and who worships the ancient Roman snake god Glycon, who he admits was created as a fraud. What is perhaps most striking about Lost Girls , then, is that the reader thinks about almost none of this while reading it, if only because of how very obscene the book is. Because this is, I think, what is so very easy to forget in talking about Lost Girls : the book is obscene. I do not merely mean shocking — though it certainly is that as well. It could be shocking by just suggesting that Alice, Dorothy, and Wendy might be having sex.

Also available digitally in three volumes one , two , three. Each busts the frames of its respective genre with formal precision; each reflects upon its own ways and means through books within the book; and, most importantly, each kicks great writing into hyperdrive with dense and resonant imagery. It's genuinely dangerous. Whatever you call it, there has never been anything quite like this in the world before, and I find myself extraordinarily pleased that someone of Moore's ability actually has written that sort of comics for adults. For more than a century, Alice, Wendy and Dorothy have been our guides through the Wonderland, Neverland and Land of Oz of our childhoods. Now like us, these three lost girls have grown up and are ready to guide us again, this time through the realms of our sexual awakening and fulfillment. Through their familiar fairytales they share with us their most intimate revelations of desire in its many forms, revelations that shine out radiantly through the dark clouds of war gathering around a luxury Austrian hotel. Drawing on the rich heritage of erotica, Lost Girls is the rediscovery of the power of ecstatic writing and art in a sublime union that only the medium of comics can achieve. Exquisite, thoughtful, and human, Lost Girls is a work of breathtaking scope that challenges the very notion of art fettered by convention. This is erotic fiction at its finest. The book, at least in large black-and-white photocopy form, was not a one-handed read. I've always found Alan Moore to be a pretentious dick.

It not only engages our senses but also our minds and spirits. Show full review. So we have these girls all grown up and having sexual adventures — what human beings actually do. Is it supposed to shock people, or make them question themselves if they find themselves turned on by it? Far from Moore's best work, it is still probably the most literary Tijuana bible ever created. I read this over the span of 3 days so I wouldnt get burnt out on it and I think that was a wise choice. We hardly spoke, returning to the boat. In Moore's case, it is likely a very lazy attempt to be outrageous and is not intended to promote child rape, but the effect is the same. One of them was Dorothy, and the other was a woman in her fifties but a shrewd and imposing elegant figure. As a long-term campaigner for the consideration of erotica's artistic and literary value, I find that Moore's work is a refreshing challenge to those who would ban sexual content from the shelves. There are the three female main characters and their "we don't need a man! In the fourth chapter Moore follows one couple through supper to bedtime. Barrie, and Lewis Carroll may be rolling in their respective graves, but that shouldn't dissuade us from finally admitting that their characters did indeed possess genitals beneath their billowing bloomers and constricting corsets, and, perhaps, the desire and willingness to use them.
Almost 10 years before his The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen took many of the figures of Victorian popular fiction on a remarkable romp, Alan Moore, in collaboration with underground artist Melinda Gebbie, began Lost Girls , with a similar, although less fantastical, conceit: that the three women whose adventures in girlhood may have inspired respectively, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland , Peter Pan and Wendy and the Wizard of Oz , meet in a Swiss hotel shortly before the first World War. Wendy, Dorothy and Alice, three very different women—one jaded and old; one trapped in a frigid adulthood; the last a spunky but innocent young American good-time girl—provide each other with the liberation they need, while also providing very different and, for this is a pornography, very sexual versions of the stories we associate with them. We go with the girls, in memory, to the incidents that became the Rabbit Hole, Oz and Neverland.
I received all 3 volumes via Inter-library loan, and read the first one in its entirety. I found this repellent yet thought-provoking in the larger context. That's what Moore wants you to feel! Not surprisingly, they put a whole new spin on the Land of Oz and its supposedly sexless inhabitants. And as someone else pointed out, where are the Lost Boys? But this inverted world is at once two worlds, both of them seemingly contradictory — both the familiar fantasy world and the adult world, that the sex act initiates Alice into, but also the adult world that the sex act marks Alice as a part of. Yes, Alice, someone's fingering you, please stop interrupting yourself to be surprised about that. Is it justified? Erotic fantasy. Yes, we all have strap-ons. Two stars: The sex is only occasionally sexy and I didn't care about any of the characters.
