What if music was the sound of rebellion? The title comes from a 19th century dance that was inspired by Corpus Christi processions in Lima, but which, in this case, the blessed subject was replaced instead by Black figures which represented evil forces. But one wonders as well if the spacey synth washes in the context of this brooding percussion-heavy piece suggest that technology has brought evil to the land. Today, Agua Dulce is a working class beach, but in the 19th century the area was an elite resort destination. Hop and Robles have reclaimed the sands, as it were, from the ruling class. And their method includes instrumentation that is similarly fraught with meaning. Traditional percussion in the 21st century is typically performed in a friendly context, like a neighborhood drum circle or other amicable multi-cultural gathering. This is heady stuff, a whole history lesson embedded in what inattentive listeners might pass off as merely a global subgenre of intelligent dance music. Agua Dulce pulls off the brilliant task of layering the past with the present.

The box-shaped percussion instrument is now commonly used in acoustic setups but it originated in 19th-century Peru as a makeshift means of enslaved people defying Spanish colonial restrictions on music. Workers would put down their wooden crates and begin using them as drums, beating out rhythms and producing dances that have since become part of folk tradition.
