If I were to start an inpatient clinic for antisocial workaholics, I might model it after the rickety wooden boats that serve as mass transportation in the Amazon. My clients would be forced to spend all day doing nothing but lying on a hammock, taking in the breeze, eating three hearty if monotonous meals a day, looking out for surfacing river dolphins and making new friends without even trying. This future business plan is being concocted from a hammock, on a boat that is churning down the Madeira River during my four-day, four-night trip from Manaus — the most populous city in the Amazon — to Porto Velho near the Bolivian border. I bought mine at the port just before boarding. Though the boat has three decks — the lower one housing the kitchen and cargo like paint, dog food and detergent headed for smaller ports along the way, and the upper deck housing the bar — the center of life is on the middle deck festively crisscrossed with brightly colored hammocks of all imaginable hues.
