The AMX is a French light tank produced from to The tank was designed at the Atelier de Construction d'Issy-les-Moulineaux AMX in to meet a requirement for amx vci air-portable vehicle to support paratroopers.

Its story began during the early stages of the cold war in the s, being based of the AMX light tank. During its service it would be upgraded with stronger armament and would serve the French army up until , where it would be replaced for a more conventional and modern design known as the AMXP.

In more recent years production and marketing of the complete range of AMX family of light armoured vehicles, including the VCI infantry combat vehicle, was carried out by Mecanique Creusot-Loire.
