It is the fourth live-action series in the Star Wars franchise and a prequel to the spin-off film Rogue One , which in turn is a prequel to the original Star Wars film The series follows thief-turned-rebel spy Cassian Andor during the five years that lead to the events of the two films. Diego Luna reprises his role as Cassian Andor and also serves as an executive producer. Lucasfilm announced a series focused on Andor in November , with Luna attached and Stephen Schiff hired as showrunner. Schiff was replaced by Rogue One co-writer Gilroy as creator and showrunner in April Filming took place at Pinewood Studios in London and on location around the United Kingdom , and wrapped by September Andor received acclaim from critics, who considered it the "most complex, mature story in Star Wars lore". Beginning five years before the events of Rogue One and A New Hope , the series follows an ensemble cast of characters during the time that a Rebel Alliance is forming in opposition to the Galactic Empire. One of these characters is Cassian Andor , a thief who becomes a revolutionary and eventually joins the Rebellion. Sam Witwer provides the uncredited voice of the shoretrooper who arrests Andor on Niamos. Benjamin Bratt has been cast in an undisclosed role for the second season. The second season is planned to consist of 12 episodes. Ariel Kleiman , Janus Metz , and Alonso Ruizpalacios will direct episodes of the second season, with Kleiman directing six episodes. Tony Gilroy wrote the third episode of the season.
