In the mysterious future, crystalline organisms called Gems inhabit a world that has been destroyed by six meteors. Each Gem is assigned a anime about gems in order to fight against the Lunarians, a species who attacks them in order to shatter their bodies and use them as decorations.

This list is subject to change but this is my personal collection of favorites in the meantime. You won't find a ton of sports or ecchi anime on this list nothing against them but I think theres a pretty decent variety otherwise. My favorites are often a mix of Shonen, Thrillers and Slice-Of-Life with a few niche picks here and there. Is the concept executed well? Are there any plot holes or loose ends?

There are supposedly 28 gems on the island at the start of the story. The Gems take the forms of humans, but with bodies made of polished gemstone that differ depending on their material composition. Most of them have hair, eyes, and nails the same color as their gemstone bodies and white skin made from a plant-based powder they apply to protect from sea breeze and harsh sunlight. While their hair may look solid, it can be manipulated similarly to human hair cut, tied, braided, etc. Apart from the adult Kongo , their appearances take the form of androgynous young teens standing at cm on average. The Gems are born at the Shore of Nascency every to 1, years on average, where crystals rose up from the sea over eons. Some of these crystals fully develop into an angular humanoid form though lacking eyes and become a Gem, while others never reach that stage and simply fall back to earth as inanimate crystals. Kongo corrects each Gem with a chisel and grants them eyes after they are born on the Shore of Nascency, removing asymmetries to make all the gems equal. The Gems lack any sexual characteristics and even navels, making them completely sexless. Their outer body functions much like a human's, and they appear to be able to use all five senses, though they are numb to temperature. They can determine another Gem's hardness by touch. Each Gem is differentiated by their hardness and toughness.

It first began airing on October 7, and ran until December 23, The series has been licensed by Amazon Prime and later Sentai Filmworks for a physical release in the west. The anime covers most of the events of the first 36 chapters of the manga. The anime skips the events in chapters 33 to 35 with only half of chapter 32 and 36 being adapted. Phosphophyllite , the youngest of the gems, is extremely brittle with a hardness of three and a half, and its toughness is weak, making it unsuitable for combat. Also, there is no aptitude for other work.

Despite their high offensive power, their toughness is second rate and they're easily broken. The other Gems consider them lovely and a top fashion model. Diamond has a clear, colorless scheme, yet their gem's characteristically high refractive index causes the light that hits them to refract strongly, creating a rainbow effect. They are very sparkly and blinding, glowing even during the night, though they seem to be able to dampen this by covering parts of their body up. Their hair is a fluffy short-medium bob, with thick eyebrows and eyelashes. On Earth, they wore either a winter or summer uniform depending on the season. They also wore standard black loafers with small bows. As a diamond, they always wore white opera gloves with white thigh-highs. On the Moon, they wear feminine and frilly outfits that often resemble dresses with puffy skirts. During the Invasion Arc's invasion, the back of their head had a huge bow, they wore a light halterneck leotard with vertical stripes, they also wore a huge flower-shaped skirt and wore pointed toe boots with high heels and wore opera gloves.

It follows the Lustrous — immortal humanoid life forms who are the embodiments of gemstones — who defend themselves against the Lunarians, who seek to harvest their bodies for decorations. Phosphophyllite is the youngest of the Lustrous, and is given the task to assemble a natural history since they are too brittle to fight. Orange created the series with 3D animation as a base, a decision made partially due to the difficulty in depicting translucent gemstones using hand-drawn animation. While the manga is more ambiguous and subtle, the anime had to be clear on a single viewing, so Phos was given more close-up shots and repeated lines to give them a larger presence and more easily identifiable goals. The series was well received by critics, frequently called among the best of the s and a turning point for CG anime, and convincing skeptics that an action series could be well done outside of a 2D production. The writing was also positively received, with critics calling the characters and world likable and intriguing.
