Arnheid

She was Ketil's personal maid and concubine, and a caretaker of Sverkel, arnheid.

Her arc so far has been impressive and it managed to showcase what Vinland Saga is truly about from every angle, without flashy action and drawn-out fights. He feels for the kids who get caught stealing and does everything he can to protect them without looking weak in front of his retainers. However, this is exactly where the root of his problems lies. He spent most of his life lying and trying to preserve his pride through things he is good at, mainly farming and managing. Yet, deep down Ketil is nothing more than a coward and the only person who knows this is Arnheid. Arnheid is his confidant and mistress, but also the only one who knows true him.

Arnheid

The more I think about it, the worse I feel for Arnheid and her current situation today. It really is unfair that she has to tolerate and deal with her current dilemma all for want of riches never obtained. For want of riches and silver, she became a pauper and a sex slave today. It was a sign of the times that still happens today — try to get an advantage over your obvious competition before they overtake all you hold dear. Where there was a wealthy slave-owner who essentially struck fear into the settlements surrounding him? And since Thors was the only one capable of fighting him head-on, he ignored his intimidating reputation and instead tried to negotiate with him. As Vinland Saga has told us repeatedly, not everybody is like Thors. Especially even his own son, Thorfinn. Thors was a man who comes around once every generation, and that is something even Askeladd acknowledged. No, Gardar saw a future for his wife and child that he would never be able to obtain. A simple solution that went horribly wrong by well-intentioned men who ultimately brought about the ruin of their lives, village, and families. To make matters worse, the child seems to be the only conflicting motive Arnheid has for staying on the farm. Unfortunately while searching for more about Arnheid on the wiki I ended up skimming her fate, and this fact ultimately leaves me even more unimpressed with Ketil.

The following contains major spoilers for Season 2 of Vinland Saga and mentions of physical abuse and sexual assault toward women. One of the most important lessons in Vinland Saga is that the Viking Age is kind to absolutely no one. It doesn't matter if they're a good person—this bloodthirsty era is unforgiving to most. It's something fans learned off the bat in Season 1 when Thorfinn's dad, Thors, was killed, and Thorfinn ended up being used by Askeladd as a dog of war. Sadly, Season 2 isn't any more hopeful, with Thorfinn meeting other kind folks on Ketil's farm who are shackled by servitude. At the core of it is Einar, a fellow slave who'd become Thorfinn's best friend. Both characters bonded through enormous tragedy, which is why fans do garner a sense of relief that Vinland Saga's Season 2 ending takes them away from the turmoil to a haven.

Considered to be one of the best anime series in recent years, Vinland Saga captivated fans when it was released in Now returning for its second season, the historical Viking epic picks up on the story of Thorfinn following the shocking events of the first season. After witnessing the death of his father, Thorfinn vows revenge on the man responsible — the formidable leader, Askeladd. Deciding to keep his enemies close, Thorfinn bands with Askeladd in season one to improve his fighting skills and eventually earn the opportunity to face him in a duel. When the opportunity is taken from him to kill Askeladd by Prince Canute — who is trying to prove his worth as King — Thorfinn feels his life now lacks direction and purpose. The first season of Vinland Saga serves as a prologue of sorts for our complicated hero, Thorfinn. He undergoes a huge transformation following the death of his father and his sole motivation is revenge and to kill Askeladd. Having honed his skills as a fighter, Thorfinn is distraught to lose the chance to kill Askeladd for himself, and season 2 finds him in a very different place. Having been enslaved for attacking Prince Canute — the man who took away his opportunity to kill Askeladd — Thorfinn works on the land and struggles with the lack of purpose in his life. A towering giant and a formidable Viking, Thorkell is arguably the strongest character in Vinland Saga — at least in the physical sense.

Arnheid

The only way to answer this question is by examining her origin story within the manga. She reveals that her family resided in Sweden, where they uncovered a settlement rich in iron. Unfortunately, this discovery would lead to a conflict between other residents who also sought the ore, resulting in a battle that would last for weeks. Nonetheless, Gardar joins the battle and bids farewell to their one-year-old, Hjalti. Sadly, the village loses the fight, and the enemy ships raid the settlement to burn down their homes, kill the elderly, and capture all the women. During this time in Vinland Saga , the opposing side takes away Hjalti, and Arnheid blames her husband for this tragic occurrence because he went along with the battle.

Title Discussion. Manga Chapters and Volumes Story Arcs. New reply Back to top. Hopefully, if Vinland Saga Season 3 goes back to his farm, fans learn he suffered the way he broke others. I think the author doesn't kill character willy nilly. Inline Feedbacks. Sep 29, AM. She did need to die though imo. The following contains major spoilers for Season 2 of Vinland Saga and mentions of physical abuse and sexual assault toward women. Which to be fair, the author of the manga still tried to make her a well written character but to me she was a plot device. Much like Ketil, he sees her as his property — something to protect and cherish but not someone to listen to and respect as an equal.

The first half of Vinland Saga season 2 was fantastic.

However, while Ketil's slave estate is reshaped and freedom granted to most, one endearing character there suffers the worst fate with no justice garnered at all. She needed to die to give Thorfinn more reason to search for Vinland, as well as inspire Einar to come with Thorfinn. He is very intentional with character's death most of the time. And I also said that when Arnheid passed out and Thorfinn and Einar talked to her about Einar's love and Thorfinn told her about Vinland and then Einar goes to kill Ketil and Thorfinn stopped him. I don't think it is bad to portray this world as it is. Can we promise such a place, where people don't fight among themselves? Her life was not easy in any way and she has lost so much but she keeps looking for something to hold on to. The only way for Arnheid to remain safe was to cut ties with Gardar and remain on the farm. New reply. Sign me up.
