Over the years, the anime has presented the main hero with numerous companions. Of all the girls Ash has been friends with, though, none have been as close to a potential relationship ash and misty Serena.

That's not to say that Ash and Misty's potential romance was entirely a creation of the dub, of course. When asked if she and Ash are together, Misty then goes into a routine about how he's a "boy" and a "friend" while trying not to say boyfriend--but in Japanese, Misty insists it is mere coincidence that they keep traveling in the same direction.
