By Dolly Busby. A breast surgeon and survivor of the Iran-Iraq war has won the Great British Sewing Bee and plans to create bespoke mastectomy bras for her patients. Specialising in making lingerie, the triumphant Asmaa plans to channel her creativity for good by making a range of bras for mastectomy patients. Asmaa's full-time job is as a consultant breast surgeon in Cardiff but her sewing hobby means she is already known for making post-op bras for her patients. Her intricate and colourful creations won her Britain's Best Amateur Sewer of on Wednesday after 'spellbinding' the judges and host, Sarah Pascoe.

During the Iraq and Iran War, Asmaa would spend her time watching and learning from her grandmother who was a seamstress. She would hand sew the most fabulous wardrobe for her dolls, using any scraps and remnants she could find. After finally escaping Iraq, aged 14, Asmaa and her family moved to Durham where her father was working as a scientist. At 18, she moved to Cardiff to study medicine, where she is now a consultant breast surgeon at a cancer centre. Asmaa lives with her husband and two children. Her wardrobe is mostly self-made as she likes to create brightly coloured modesty clothing to match her designer shoes — her one indulgence to herself. She also specialises in making underwear, creating sets to coordinate with her outfits, and she is even known to have made post-op bras for her breast cancer patients. Her style is feminine, modest, and classic. Apart from sewing, Asmaa enjoys knitting, crocheting and going to the theatre or rock concerts with her teenage daughter.
