Bahai prayers

There is no set form for devotions and meditations. Participants in a devotional gathering take turns reading aloud from a prayer book, while the others listen in reverent silence. The benefit of prayer, however, is not obtained by the act of praying itself, but the spiritual state induced by prayer. Prayer is used to express an individual's love of God and to affect their inner self. The obligatory prayer is a primary religious obligation starting at the age of fifteen and it is the most important kind of prayer. The short and the medium prayer have to be said at specific times; the short has to be said once between noon and sunset and the medium has to be said three times daily: once between sunrise and noon, once between noon and sunset and once between sunset and two hours after sunset. The medium and long prayers also include movements and gestures during the prayers, which are themselves obligatory except when a person is physically incapable of performing them. Shoghi Effendi has written that the motions and gestures are symbolic and are used to help concentration during the prayers. Prayers have been written for awakening, for travelling, healing, spiritual growth, detachment, protection, forgiveness, assistance, and unity, among others. When saying a general prayer, one does not need to face the Qiblih. The end of the prayer is usually composed of a list of God's attributes. The prayers often use imagery, including references to Islamic literature and Persian poetry. The purpose of meditation is to strengthen one's understanding of the words of God, and to make one's soul more susceptible to their potentially transformative power, [12] more receptive to the need for both prayer and meditation to bring about and maintain a spiritual communion with God.

Bahai prayers

O God, guide me, protect me, make of me a shining lamp and a brilliant star. Thou art the mighty and the powerful. O God! Refresh and gladden my spirit. Purify my heart. Illumine my powers. I lay all my affairs in Thy hand. Thou art my Guide and my Refuge. I will no longer be sorrowful and grieved; I will be a happy and joyful being.

Grant us that which is good and seemly that we may be able to dispense with everything but Thee. O thou incomparable God! Verily, these servants are turning to Thee, supplicating Thy kingdom of mercy. Verily, Thou art the Lord of grace abounding. O Thou Who art mighty and powerful! The necks of men are stretched out in malice: Where are the swords of Thy vengeance, O Destroyer of the worlds? Whether traveling or at home, and in my occupation or in my work, I place my whole trust in Thee. Thou art the Lord of bounty and grace, invincible in Thy power and the most skillful in Thy designs. Suffer me not, I implore Thee, to be kept back from the ocean of Thy tender mercies, nor to be far removed from the shores of nearness to Thee. She then descended with such an adorning as to illumine the heavens and all that is therein. Confer Thy blessings. O God, guide me, protect me, make of me a shining lamp and a brilliant star.

Blessed is the spot, and the house, and the place, and the city, and the heart, and the mountain, and the refuge, and the cave, and the valley, and the land, and the sea, and the island, and the meadow where mention of God hath been made, and His praise glorified. Intone, O My servant, the verses of God that have been received by thee, as intoned by them who have drawn nigh unto Him, that the sweetness of thy melody may kindle thine own soul, and attract the hearts of all men. Whoso reciteth, in the privacy of his chamber, the verses revealed by God, the scattering angels of the Almighty shall scatter abroad the fragrance of the words uttered by his mouth, and shall cause the heart of every righteous man to throb.

Verily this is that Most Great Beauty, foretold in the Books of the Messengers, through Whom truth shall be distinguished from error and the wisdom of every command shall be tested. Each day, one of three obligatory prayers should be said: a short prayer recited once every 24 hours between noon and sunset a medium prayer recited three times a day, in the morning, at noon and in the evening a long prayer that has to be recited once in every 24 hours at any time - ideally when in a state of awe and reverence The believer can choose any one of the three prayers, but must recite one of them. Thy loving providence hath encompassed all created things in the heavens and on the earth, and Thy forgiveness hath surpassed the whole creation. Thou art the God Who knoweth all things, and is supreme over all things. O Thou King of Kings! Bestow on us the Food of Heavenly Illumination! Glory be unto Thee, O Lord my God! O Thou kind and loving Providence! Send down, then, upon me, out of the heaven of Thy mercy, a blessing from Thy side, and enable me to return home in safety even as Thou didst enable me to set out under Thy protection with my thoughts fixed steadfastly upon Thee. Nothing escapeth Thy knowledge. Protect her, moreover, from every affliction and ailment, from all pain and sickness, and from whatsoever may be abhorrent unto Thee. Glory be unto Thee, O my God! I beg of Thee by the ocean of Thy healing, and by the splendors of the Daystar of Thy grace, and by Thy Name through which Thou didst subdue Thy servants, and by the pervasive power of Thy most exalted Word and the potency of Thy most august Pen, and by Thy mercy that hath preceded the creation of all who are in heaven and on earth, to purge me with the waters of Thy bounty from every affliction and disorder, and from all weakness and feebleness. Consider not our shortcomings. If Thou abandonest them, who is there to befriend them; and if Thou puttest them far from Thee, who is he that can favor them?
