Full member of the International Cricket Council with Test and one-day international status, Bangladesh played its first Test match against India in The Asian minnows made their official international cricket debut at the ICC Trophy in England, where they had mixed results, leaving the tournament with 2 wins and 2 defeats. With cricket getting more popular among the Bangladeshi people, the game got a fillip when the team won the ICC Trophy in Malaysia in Nobody really gave Bangladesh much attention at the tournament until a shock win over Pakistan in a group phase match made everyone sit up and take notice. Bangladesh co-hosted the ICC Cricket World Cup along with India and Sri Lanka, but unfortunately, failed to qualify for the knock-out stage, thereby ending their World Cup campaign in disappointment. Since then, however, Bangladesh have been a force to reckon with especially at home and in the shorter format. They fared better in the World Cup which took place in Australia where they beat the English side and hence finished above them to enter the quarter-final stage. They were eventually beaten by the then reigning champions, India. The Bangla Tigers kept growing after that. Even in the longest format of the game, they bagged wins over Australia, England and Sri Lanka in their own backyard.

They first competed in international cricket at 31 March , when they played against Pakistan in a one-day international match at Moratuwa , Sri Lanka ; they lost the match by 7 wickets. At 10 November , Bangladeshi team played their first test match against India , losing the match by 9 wickets. They won by runs in that first test of the series. Also, Bangladesh took 4 years and 2 months from the date of first test to win a test, best to only New Zealand , South Africa and India. In this period Bangladesh regularly participated in one-day international matches which include tournaments like Asia Cup , Austral-Asia Cup.

They have been locking horns in the over format since Australia are dominating the rivalry record having won 19 out of 21 matches played against Bangladesh. Regarding the World Cup, they have played each other in three matches with Australia winning all of them pretty comfortably. Meanwhile, Australia and Bangladesh are scheduled to face each other in the 43rd match of the Cricket World Cup in India. They won against Sri Lanka a few days ago, but their skipper Shakib Al Hasan got injured during that match and has been ruled out. They had started their tournament with twin losses but have won six on the bounce since then. They will be high on confidence despite a below-par show against Afghanistan.
