Knockaround Guys. By Steven Horn. Knockaround Guys had been kicking around Hollywood for what seemed like ages. I think I saw a trailer almost 18 months before its release. Suddenly, Knockaround Guys had a release date and a big star to help propel it into the multiplex? Who says stars don't open films? What's sort of funny about this whole situation is the fact that Knockaround Guys already had a decent complement of stars.

It's all downhill, however, after that strong opening, and the movie degenerates into the usual gangster film cliches. The next time we see Matty, he's in his twenties and now played by Barry Pepper who probably hopes you remember him as the devout sharpshooter in Saving Private Ryan rather than as the hero of Battlefield Earth ; the guy is trying to go straight by becoming a sports agent a rather funny idea that the movie never has the brains to exploit for a laugh — only a gangster's son could see becoming an agent as "going straight" but his infamous last name and family connections keep legitimate employment out of his reach. Everything goes smoothly until the money passes through the tiny town of Wibaux, Montana, where the money disappears and the shifty local sheriff the always great Tom Noonan from Manhunter throws a hitch in their plan. The leads are all fine, although fans of Vin Diesel would probably be better off finding a second run house that's still playing XXX or popping in their DVDs of Pitch Black and The Fast and the Furious , because he's definitely a supporting player here. It's really Pepper's show, and he's definitely a strong presence. The biggest disappointment is that Koppelman and Levien do so little with the older actors, Hopper and Malkovich — those guys are so great and cool that it's sort of amazing they give such phoned-in performances. The film clicks along nicely with a brisk running time of right around 90 minutes and is definitely never boring, even though it never comes together as anything but a pose. While Knockaround Guys is to be credited for never taking the Tarantino post-modernist route, it still feels like a gangster picture that was made by a couple of guys who have seen a lot of gangster movies — rather than being able to bring anything fresh or realistic to the table.
