Support sarna. Fusion engines are the most common type of BattleMech and aerospace power plant in the BattleTech Universe.
Battlemech designers have operated for centuries on the basic assumption that making a battlemech heavier increased its ability to carry armor and weaponry, and therefore its performance in toe-to-toe combat. This also comes with the assumption that certain weight classes of battlemech are sufficiently better at certain missions than other weight classes - that light mechs make better scouts, for example - that it overrides the reduced combat potential. When considered in more depth, however, it becomes apparent that the key feature of the battlemech in these cases is not its weight class, but its mobility. An Ostscout makes a better scout than an Atlas , not because of its lighter weight, but because of its superior speed and jump-capability. As a result of this, we end up with mech designers increasing a mech's weight to increase its combat potential, while keeping the speed the same to maintain the machine's appropriateness for its mission. At the extreme of this mentality, we have the CGR-1A1 Charger , which is classified as an "assault mech" by weight, but, in combat, is barely a match for most light mechs.

Fusion engines, like other engines, are defined by their "engine rating".

Support sarna. Fusion engines are the most common type of BattleMech and aerospace power plant in the BattleTech Universe. Fusion engines can supply great quantities of power, enough for massive vehicles and all of their weapon systems, including the directed energy weapons common on modern battlefields. When no thrust is generated, fusion engines are extremely efficient, practically never needing refueling. If properly ventilated, controlled fusion reactions generate little heat. There are several sub-types of fusion engines available as well, each trading bulk for mass of the components. The fusion engine is capable of powering 'Mechs, Aerospace Fighters, and other vehicles. Fusion engines function by harnessing the power of a fusion reaction, as occurs in the core of the Sun. A BattleMech's fusion engine can usually last for decades on a few kilograms of hydrogen.

The Extralight fusion engine often shortened to XL fusion engine , XL or addressed as extra-light [1] is mechanically similar to a fusion engine but uses much lighter radiation shielding. Replacing the dense tungsten carbide of standard fusion engines with a crystalline polymer similar to that of double heat sinks , the XL fusion engine is half the mass for the same performance. There is a penalty in bulk, however. The Inner Sphere XL fusion engine is twice as large as the standard fusion engine, while the Clan model is about two-thirds larger. The larger volume of the engines makes them much more likely to end up in the path of penetrating hits. Further, these bulkier engines intrude into the side torso bays of a BattleMech , exposing the 'Mechs to catastrophic engine damage from structural damage that would be otherwise survivable. There is also a penalty in cost; an XL fusion engine is four times as expensive as a standard, a component that is already usually the largest cost in a BattleMech. Despite this, the allure of huge weight reduction means that the technology sees wide use as evidenced by the long list of manufacturers below. Developed by Terran Hegemony scientists in [2] as prototypes, these power plants first saw production use by their armed forces in

As you can see from the graph or from my abridged list , this makes Large Engines very impractical, and in some cases outright unattainable. Because the plasma is held in a vacuum chamber to isolate the superheated plasma from the cold walls of the reactor; contact with the walls would super-chill the plasma below fusion temperatures , a punctured reactor can suck in air where the air is superheated. If the RISC Hyper Laser were to ever iron out its teething issues, 20 points out at 25 hexes is a very scary potential headcapper and automatic PSR forcer that'd easily rival Clan weapons. And it would be cheaper, too. Edited by Blaze32, 26 May - AM. Something really needs to change. These figures lead to the startling conclusion that it is possible, in some cases, to increase the combat potential of a mech by reducing its overall mass. Posted 11 May - AM. They're not as compact as the standard variants but that accuracy buff especially if paired with a targeting computer can work wonders. PACs were intended to be autocannons that are lightweight enough to be carried on a Protomech, nothing more. This also comes with the assumption that certain weight classes of battlemech are sufficiently better at certain missions than other weight classes - that light mechs make better scouts, for example - that it overrides the reduced combat potential.
I apologise, but, in my opinion, you are mistaken. Let's discuss it.
