Beer rating refers to the process of assessment and evaluation of beer by use of a points-based system. BeerAdvocate is an online beer rating site which also rates bars and beer stores. As of November , BeerAdvocate's database contained about 3,, ratings of about , beers. RateBeer was founded in May by Bill Buchanan [18] as a forum for beer drinkers to exchange information and share opinions of beer. In June , the web-site consultant Joe Tucker joined, eventually assuming full ownership of RateBeer. In August , RateBeer's annual press-release of the highest rated beers on the site caused concern when various world media reported that supplies of Westvleteren 12 were sold out due to being listed as the "Best beer in the world" on the site.

Jumping into the online app game of beer reviews will be BeerAdvocate with its new app, Beers by BeerAdvocate. The online beer review website that dates back to will join the beer review app craze that was created over eight years ago by Untappd. When the app goes live, it will be part of the existing BeerAdvocate database of well over 8 million reviews of , beers from 18, breweries worldwide. Yes, the ones the clog up your social media feeds from all of the tickers out there. With Beers by BeerAdvocate , users will be able to review beers, add beers, like and unlike beer reviews, quickly access key details like score, style, and alcohol by volume, share pictures of beers, scan barcodes, and view glassware suggestions. The app will also offer unprecedented new ways to search, sort, and filter brewery beer lists as well as personal beer lists including performing all three functions simultaneously. Plus, an in-app browser will enable users to view and surf brewery websites without ever leaving the app. Similarly, phone calls to any brewery with a listed number will be possible from within Beers by BeerAdvocate.

At a time when two websites ruled the user-generated beer review scene — BeerAdvocate and RateBeer — Untappd launched with a simple twist: focus on having a great mobile app to make handheld beer rating easier on the go. The strategy worked, and the newcomer quickly became an industry force, leaving its two competitors playing catch-up. At this point, we can put RateBeer aside. But for years, BeerAdvocate was my go-to beer rating website. Much of the data is stored within the app so in essence, every person who has it installed on their mobile device effectively has a mini version of BeerAdvocate stored locally.
