One of the largest buildings in the world devoted entirely to rare books and manuscripts, the library can accommodate , volumes in the central tower and more than , volumes in the underground book stacks. The library sits within a foot by foot plaza surrounded by Neo-classic and Gothic style buildings. Below the plaza are two levels. The lower one contains mechanical equipment and a large book stack plaza; the upper one features a smaller stack space, catalog and reference room, a reading room, staff offices, and a sunken court designed by Isamu Noguchi. The entrance lobby at plaza level is glass-enclosed and, upon entering, reveals a vast exhibition hall. Wide twin flights of stairs connect to the floor below and the exhibition balcony above.

The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library is one of the world's largest buildings devoted entirely to rare books and manuscripts and is Yale's principal repository for literary archives, early manuscripts, and rare books. The Beinecke Library's robust collections are used to create new scholarship by researchers from around the world. There is an accessible entrance on the side of the building facing Wall Street. This entrance is normally locked but is in sight view of the front desk attendant. The elevator is located near the main desk. Research areas and public exhibition spaces are accessible to the handicapped via elevator. Accessible men's and women's bathrooms are located on the bottom floor. Researchers requiring special accommodations are encouraged to email beinecke. The books they donated were the first of many gifts to follow over the next three centuries, including the cryptic Voynich Manuscript and one of the twenty one original Gutenberg Bibles known to exist, which was given to the university in Paul Rudolph, the then Dean of the Yale School of Architecture, decided to hold a competition between four firms for the privilege to design the Beinecke Library. I believe one of the most important things in doing a building is writing a program, and that entails almost living with the people who are going to use the building, finding out how they hope to work in it, not listening to their solutions but listening to their needs. A primary concern in the design of the library was the control of light. Sufficient ambient lighting was required to enable the building to serve as a place for study and reading; however, exposure to sunlight could damage the carefully-preserved texts of the collection. The marble panels are placed into a gridded frame of light gray Vermont granite.

History and Architecture.
