When Irena disappears, so begins a high brow, albeit funny and mischievous tale, that explores the intricacies of language and expression. Without giving too much away, think: locked-room murder mystery with suspects only identified by the language they speak Serbian, Sweden, English, French, German, Slovenian, Spanish and Ukrainian. The translators are totally bizarre and flit about the forest sharing meals, putting on costumes, foraging for mushrooms and generally being strange and it makes for a fever-dream-esque, cult-like atmosphere. This is a sci-fi short story collection distinct from anything I, and probably you, have ever read before.

One of them Ruby is living a modern life, riding horses and helping out on her family farm. This is a fun mystery series with a psychic as the main character. The three hosts are funny and friendly. Will she be able to catch a rapist and disentangle herself from the Greek Mafia while keeping confidences and staying alive? I read this book hoping that it would be better then the last but I honestly feel like it's much worse. I liked the second one even better than the first. In this book, Abby is doing a favor for a friend and working as a tarot card reader at a wedding reception. Really, that's your solution when you realize you're mixed up with the mob? Needless to say, the father of the bride is not someone to mess with. How shocking that they wanted their money back and got her mixed up into the rest of this mess. I seldom make a mistake like this and I will read the 2nd Ghoul book. Martyring yourself is so fucking annoying. I've also noticed from the author's Thank You's that several other characters are real life individuals she knows.

We also get to see a bit more of Abby's sister, and she brings a unique spunkiness to the story for a bit of levity to round out the novel. I loved the relationship that developed between Abby and Milo. There were several scenes of strong humor in the book, including her and her friend when they realized what kind of wedding they were reading for and rushing out of there. We talk about poverty and violence in rural America, masculinity, class, epic, and the classic Philadelphia tradition Wing Bowl.
