As the Wraith Noob Saibot , he has been a recurring antagonist in the series, following others on the side of evil while serving as a major antagonist towards his younger brother and Hanzo Hasashi. Before his death, Bi-Han was the original Sub-Zero, one of the most powerful and devout warriors of the Lin Kuei clan. While essentially neutral, he was a cold-blooded, vicious assassin whose soul had become corrupted from years of violence and remorseless killing. At the end of the first Mortal Kombat tournament, Bi-Han was murdered by Scorpion in retaliation for his own death at the cryomancer's hands. He then descended to the fifth plane of the Netherrealm where he was resurrected by the necromancer sorcerer Quan Chi , who had earlier resurrected Scorpion as well. The evil within Bi-Han's soul was released by stripping him of pride, compassion, and everything else that made him human. Eventually reborn in the Netherrealm , now as the shadow wraith Noob Saibot, he becomes the very incarnation of evil. He desires not only to remain in the Netherrealm, but to conquer and rule it. Although he has been seen in the service of evil warlords such as Shinnok and Shao Kahn , his ultimate allegiance is to himself. In the new timeline , Bi-Han is the rightful successor to be Grandmaster of the Lin Kuei, of which he becomes. He is the older brother of Kuai Liang, this timeline's Scorpion, and the adoptive brother of Smoke.
Bi-Han is disgusted by Shang Tsung's vile experiments, to a point that an intro with Liu Kang suggests that he might never have betrayed Earthrealm if he knew about them.
The main draw of a fighting game is rarely its narrative, but that hasn't stopped the Mortal Kombat franchise from developing a rich and thorough lore over its year history. Ever since the original game hit arcades, the developers behind Mortal Kombat have fleshed out fighters, realms, and an extended history of the series that could rival properties like The Lord of the Rings. Even with Mortal Kombat 1 recently rebooting the MK timeline, those many years of lore remain a present and essential aspect of the franchise's storytelling. Mortal Kombat would be nothing without its fights, and one fight that has been essential to the series from the very beginning is the one between Bi-Han's Sub-Zero and Hanzo Hasashi's Scorpion. The two ninjas are more than just Mortal Kombat 's mascots, they've endured a vengeful feud for almost as long as the series has existed. Even through MK 's sporadic reboots, Bi-Han and Hanzo always end up at each other's throats, creating a cycle of fateful violence that lasted until MK1 fundamentally changed Scorpion and Sub-Zero's origins. Their past is nevertheless unshakable, however, and worthy of a thorough exploration.
Ed Boon liked to keep secrets. During the development of the original Mortal Kombat , he quietly sneaked in a hidden character named Reptile — a green-colored palette swap of Scorpion — without telling anyone. Boon programmed the early Mortal Kombat games by himself, so he had carte blanche to include anything he wanted. It was Johnny Cage decapitating himself, because Cage was the only character in Mortal Kombat at the time. Not even his co-workers at Midway, including Mortal Kombat co-creator John Tobias, knew the green ninja was in the game until players found it in the wild.

Regardless of mantles and timelines, Bi-Han remains depicted as an anti-hero-turned-villain, while Kuai Liang is a more heroic and noble figure. One of Mortal Kombat ' s signature characters, Sub-Zero has appeared in various related media outside of the games, including films and television series both live-action and animated. He has received acclaim for his appearance, abilities, and Fatality finishing moves. Sub-Zero was first conceived by Mortal Kombat co-creator John Tobias as a mysterious character named simply "Ninja" [7] and inspired by the book China's Ninja Connection by Li Hsing, which "posits historical evidence for the existence of the Lin Kuei and their influence on the Japanese ninja. So when we split the character in two for palette swaps , [10] I thought it would be fitting that one was of Chinese origin and the other Japanese to kind of embody the argument.
