Stay at this gorgeous townhouse-bistro at the top of Catherine Street in the pretty market town of Frome and enjoy the cosiest bedrooms with sumptuous beds and fabulous showers. It's a warm and welcoming space where ten bedrooms are set above a lively bistro and bar, serving classic French cuisine from an open kitchen along with low intervention wines and a selection of well thought-through cocktails. Think bare wooden floors and low lighting with original art adorning the walls - it's the kind of inviting space you will want to return to, not just for the delicious food, but for the vibrant and friendly atmosphere. A comfortable base to explore Frome with a French influence at the heart, owner Lotte and her friendly team will ensure you are well looked after from the minute you step inside. It's well worth the short drive to Bruton, home of Hauser and Wirth, a Swiss contemporary art gallery, restaurant, farm shop and the beautiful landscaped Piet Oudolf gardens. Frome is a pretty market town, with medieval streets leading to independent shops and culinary delights. By car: around an hour from Bristol, 3 hours from London and 4 hours from Manchester.

The building dates from and the renovation revealed an array of original features, from stained-glass windows to ornate Minton tiles. Above the restaurant, the Town House has six guestrooms over two floors — and I head up to drop my bag before joining the diners. The whole place is a labour of love for Lotte, who moved to Frome from Surrey 10 years ago. She used to work as cabin crew for an airline, so hospitality has always been her thing. It has been such a success that Bistro Lotte is adding a wine bar a few doors down the street. It will open in September, though four family suites above it will be ready earlier in mid-June. Frome has had a renaissance over recent years, with a flurry of independent shops, cafes and restaurants opening. I poke my head around the door of Stony Street House — a wine shop, bar and restaurant — and wander down medieval Cheap Street, where a little stream runs along the middle of the road. I can imagine whiling away hours at the bar.
