The South African Boerboel is the only South African dog specifically bred for guarding and protecting without being aggressive. Dating back to , this breed is a descendant of the Boer dog. In the 20th century, the Boerboel was nearly extinct. They were revived, and are steadily gaining in worldwide popularity with dogs being exported and bred in Australia, Europe, Scandinavia, Asia, Russia, and the U. It is large, with a short coat, strong bone structure and well-developed muscles. The coat is short and sleek with dense hair coverage. The recognised colours are brindle, fawn, and brown; it may or may not have a black mask. The dogs show courage when threatened; [4] they may display aggression toward other dogs or strangers. The Boerboel may develop hip [17] or elbow dysplasia , vaginal hyperplasia , [18] ectropion and entropion. Ownership of the dog is limited by law in many countries: importation to Romania was prohibited in , and ownership restricted to those with a court permit; [22] the breed was banned in Denmark in ; [23] in Russia designated it an "especially dangerous breed", subject to mandatory registration and certification; [24] Ukraine has classified it as a dangerous dog, subject to mandatory microchipping , muzzle and civil liability insurance.

Well, not so fast. That answer is highly breed dependent. And in the case of the Boerboel , getting a dog from its native South Africa can be fraught with difficulty — for reasons that have to do with much more than mere logistics. And even the most fleeting glimpse of a Boerboel reveals the Bullmastiff influence in terms of the large, blocky head, tremendous bone and traditionally seen colors and patterns fawn, red and brindle. Despite all this talk of Bulldogs, the Boerboel was bred to be an incredibly athletic animal. Life in South Africa was physically taxing and frequently dangerous for humans and dogs alike. Both the Boerboel and its distant cousin the Rhodesian Ridgeback had to be all-purpose dogs, though the Boerboel was more a protection dog that could be called on to hunt, and the Ridgeback just the reverse.

The Boerboel breed descended from the ancient Molosser-type dogs around the mids in Africa. Jan van Riebeeck , the founder of the Cape of Good Hope and the Dutch settlement, brought a mastiff breed that was bred with other hounds and mastiffs of the other settlers. They called it Bullenbijter or Bullenbeisser — an extinct bull-baiting dog. Interbreeding the dogs of the European bloodlines in South Africa brought about the no-nonsense Boerboel. They were initially bred to serve as the first line of defense from predators such as hyenas, lions, leopards, and packs of marauding baboons. Eventually, they also help track and hold down wounded game. Understanding the Boerboels background and purpose is vital.
