If the answer is 'a lot', then stop reading here because this bhp model is not going to set your world alight with its straight-line pace. If the answer is 'a bit, but it's not the main priority', read on. The Z4 18i is a detuned version of the turbocharged 2. Really quite good. Its not rip-roaringly fast, but it picks up well even at motorway speeds, offering sprightly and easily accessible in-gear response. Even so, the 18i delivers enough power to let you make the most of its enjoyable handling. The standard variable steering is weighty and predictable in its sportiest setting, while throttle responses can also be adjusted and are satisfyingly precise. Like all the models using this lightweight engine, the 18i enters corners sharply and delivers delicate responses that are lacking in the heavier six-cylinder models. Its not the tightest body control in this class, but the progressive body roll is a worthwhile compromise for the planted, supple ride quality.

When the top is down, it's early morning and the sun's coming up we can assure you, you'll not care less about any hairdresser jibes.

Skoda really does make a Superb armoured car: 3-tonne, bulletproof monster driven. Nonetheless, we were impressed by the powertrain - the engine and manual gearbox it was mated with suit the car. AFAIK the only difference was that 28is had bigger front brake discs, but there are just so many more 20is to choose from! This might be the cheapest BMW Z4 , but its also one of the best to drive. And the way the car loads up and communicates what it's doing through the steering wheel - or, more to the point, doesn't - doesn't really inspire confidence to hustle it hard. Keep a hoodie and a hat in the car - although we're not entirely sure that's the assumed clientele of most Z4 buyers - and we suspect if you're bloody-minded you could drive this car with the hood down most days of the year. However, the 20i is the better bet if you're looking for properly zingy performance and is better equipped as standard. This begs the question, what is the point in buying a 28i, surely I might aswell buy a cheaper 20i or 18i, whichever is the best value and get it remapped to 28i performance not bothered about going above this and i'll upgrade the brakes myself? Because BMW have engineered the car cheaply the roof sits on a plastic deck plate when it is up as this vibrates quite a lot the two halves of the roof rattle against each other and against the rear deck, windows and header rail.
