There are greeting cards, calendars, magazines and games to mix it up, but for the most part the owners have stayed away from the catch-all kitsch approach of department-style bookstores. Even so, Dawson says the business is viable. After the first year, the partners saw an increase in revenue. July was as slow month, but the store had its best August for sales on record. Buying the store in February marked quite a contrast for Dawson and co-owners Brian Sullivan and George LaFramboise, whose main business together for the last 16 years has been Iridian Spectral Technologies, a high-tech exporting company that has more than employees.

The selections on literary fiction, biography, and history are particularly strong. The collection of several thousand books in the store is backed by the ability to order from a suppliers list of millions of volumes.
