The company has been in business since , owned by the same family for five generations. The owners hoped to mark their th anniversary with a coffee table book on the history of the family and their company. In an article published a few years ago, I had detailed the Braen company as an example of how Dutch immigrants in New Jersey had found an economic niche in the construction business. The first of the Braens was a shoemaker who arrived in Paterson, New Jersey in from the Netherlands.

We obliged by flipping their color palette from light to dark, introducing more modern fonts, intensifying the color depth of their signature green accent and creating new rules for its use, introducing new brand textures, and helping them to find a new, more purposeful voice.

Stone Industries expansion continued in with the purchase of Limecrest Quarry, which would be reopened as Braen Stone of Sparta. The Sparta Quarry dates back to when it was originally owned by Thomas Edison. Edison invested in constructing houses with prefabricated concrete components and purchased Limecrest Quarry for its limestone deposits, speculating that he could quarry the limestone, crush it to powder, mix it with aggregate pour it into molds, ship the cured components to job sites and assemble the pieces. Edison eventually sold the property to a company that marketed the limestone as an agricultural and residential fertilizer and animal feed supplement, and when those markets faded the quarry fell into the hands of corporate owners who profited from curtailing its operations before the Braen Family purchased it. In May of at the height of the COVID pandemic, when many businesses were shutting their doors, Braen was expanding with the addition of an asphalt plant located at the Sparta Quarry.
