I like Patti Murin. I think I've written on this very site about at least one of her performances. And I am not the biggest fan of the theater message boards. So I by no means intend to put down one and exalt the other. In fact, I agree with the majority of what Ms. Murin wrote and applaud her efforts.

Reply Chat Boards. Theatre Board is currently the only chat board I use to discuss theatre, and I'm pretty happy and satisfied with that as it's completely brilliant. This means that, obviously, I'm not a member of the BroadwayWorld chat board - and I know many on this board are. I'm not sure whether people have heard about this, but actress Patti Murin who was due to be in Broadway musical 'Nerds' that was pulled at the last minute as financing fell through has "taken on the chat boards" - specifically BroadwayWorld - campaigning against the negativity and snarky comments on there. Her blog post is a pretty interesting read, as are some of the comments left below it, and I'd be interested to know what people's thoughts on it are, as this board can get heated but it's still a lovely place to be and, as I said, I'm not a member of the BroadwayWorld chat board, but I sometimes feel that the same can't be said over there. I'm afraid I have no idea who Patti Murin is, but this blog post makes her sound terribly unprofessional. Cardinal Pirelli Member. I occasionally check Broadwayworld but, more often, talkinbroadway. The latter can get petty but the former often has a flippant nastiness that is quite distasteful. As for Murin she just verbalised what many in the business think; not that people on chat boards don't always like stuff because that's a given but that blatant untruths, mangled gossip and spurned 'fans' vitriol are given equal prominence. In a way I wish that more people verbalised it; as with any form of personal abuse, if ignored it does no good. Jon Star Performer. In the case of BWW, the trolling and general bitchiness had got out of hand and they've finally gotten around to doing something about it. Theatreboard and the old board are pretty mild in comparison, only certain threads like the Bend it like Beckham thread have been heated enough for mods to close it.

The simple thought of the theatre chat boards like BroadwayWorld or TheatreBoard is enough to send writers, directors, performers and producers running screaming into the night. If producers had magic powers, they would make these boards vanish, but why, why do they have such a bad rap? I have been a member of the Broadway World chat board for well over a decade, I have seen everything you can see from smartly written reviews, bitching and fighting, gossiping and paid shills more on that later. Over the years my mind has flipped back and forth on the idea of these message boards, are they simply a way for theatre fans to express and share opinions, or do they do more harm to the industry than good? Here is the thing though, with all the drama that can happen on these boards, they also contain members who I think offer a valuable contribution to the art form, ones who give smart critiques of shows, often far better reviews than the critics themselves.

BroadwayWorld is wishing a hearty-- in Oz-speak-- Congratulotions to the 'Munchkinland' touring cast of Wicked. Like Liked by 1 person. Howard Sherman. I would consider you the bully for trying to be the arbiter of what people can and cannot say. Love this! I absolutely agree. What a vibrant era of artistry in which we live. So many friends, so many colleagues there for you. The comment about Glinda's high C is quite funny. Obviously the preview period is there for a reason, otherwise critics would review the opening preview. Next Moulin Rouge! No one can love every show but personal attacks or dissing something unseen are disgusting. Because as angry as we are, we choose love. Then there was this gem: How lucky we are to be alive right now to decide between seeing Disaster or Nerds on Broadway. Pot calling the kettle black.

The wording that gives me pause is their policy of "No personal attacks - we all have different opinions - disagree with the view, not with the person. It seems more likely that they had the facility already and for whatever reason didn't use it but decided to switch it on in response to her blog as some sort of appeasement. Asking a site to remove content that you do not like even if you do not like it for good reason because you do not have the will-power to not click on it is simply wrong. By going through Facebook however, I can go use their comment policy to report abuse and usually its taken care of pretty easily. Replies: 49 Views: 12, I don't know anything about the chat boards being criticised but I hate that very American view that anything less than adulation with multiple exclamation marks makes you a bad person. The fact that she is asking BWW to do a whatsonstage on their forum shows a level of intolerance that rivals and possibly exceeds that of the BWW trolls she condemns. I worked at a major theater website to once have message boards when they had message boards. You see, many years ago, when a new show was in previews the tickets used to be discounted, after all, you are not seeing the final locked show, you are seeing something that is still in a state of flux, you are essentially a test audience, and producers would be far clearer in their marketing when a show was in previews. It reads like an emotional and entitled response against any form of non-positive criticism. So I want to know why they would willingly cultivate a cesspool of ignorance and negativity? Xanderl Member. That is because the more users, the more crap. So not only does this guy insult an actor in the most degrading, cruel way, but he disgustingly insults an entire population of people, the vast majority of which have nothing to do with this show.
