IN part four of our special on the establishment of the Brisbane Broncos 30 years ago foxsports. The admission of the Broncos caused great division among the Brisbane rugby league fanbase, many of whom were bitter that their beloved BRL competition had been plundered of its best players for this new franchise to take hold. When they ran out as Broncos for the first time on March 6, — just nine months later — there were only 17, fans there to greet them. In comparison, more than 26, packed into the Newcastle International Sports Centre to see the Knights play their first game that same weekend. The quartet had already poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into establishing their new club and could not afford to keep subsidising their ongoing existence. Terry Matterson was the starting lock for that maiden Broncos game and as one of only three Sydney imports quickly understood that this was not a city completely united behind their latest sporting team. In many ways what transpired on March 6, was the worst fears of the New South Wales Rugby League powerbrokers realised right before their very eyes. For decades debate had raged over the strength of the Brisbane competition in comparison to the richer NSWRL and here was a team — albeit bursting with Origin representatives — coming together and in their first game making the defending premiers look second-rate. The Broncos took a lead into the halftime break and despite concerns about physically being up to the standard of established clubs in the NSWRL ran riot in the second half. On their way to the title the Sea Eagles had conceded more than 30 points in a game just once; the Broncos piled on 30 in the second half alone. He returned to the Brisbane competition after just 5 games in the top grade and reappeared in the ARL once again in to have a half dozen games in the top grade with the Gold Coast Libraum.

The Brisbane Broncos season was the first in the club 's history. Despite a strong start to the season, Brisbane failed to make the finals. During the season the Broncos also competed in the Panasonic Cup. The brand-new club which featured many Queensland-based international and state representatives, defeated the Winfield Cup Premiers Manly-Warringah in their first premiership game. Although the Broncos won their first six games in their inaugural season, a midseason slump cost the club a debut finals appearance, finishing the season in seventh position.

The Broncos participated in 18 consecutive finals series from —, winning premierships six times, including the and NSWRL premierships, the Superleague premiership in and then the , and National Rugby League premierships. Whilst Brisbane had had its own rugby league club competition since , Brisbane teams had been assembled occasionally, usually referred to as Combined Brisbane for Bulimba Cup tournaments and representative matches against Sydney-based sides and touring international teams. By the s, the New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership decided they wanted to expand outside their traditional Sydney base. This began in with the introduction of the Canberra Raiders and the Illawarra Steelers. A proposal was made to the Queensland Rugby League to enter a Brisbane team in , but it was voted down. After deliberating over such names as Bulls, Brumbies, Bombers and Kookaburras, the club eventually decided on the name Broncos.
