The project is located in the northern sector of the commune of Valdivia , Los Rios Region Chile , immersed in an evergreen vegetation that together with a strong rainy climate characterizes the so-called Valdivian Rainforest. The commission originally consisted of a small shelter of 45 square meters, adjacent to the main house of the property. The volume is specifically inserted in a sloping area within the property, gaining a height through piles that seek panoramic views of the area, specifically towards the west, where the Calle-Calle River is located. The project materializes this search through a completely glazed face, this visual escape is built through a curtain wall of almost six meters long, thus achieving an accentuated friction between the domestic interior and the wild exterior. From the outside, the resulting faces are solid, mono-material, and dark, containing small indispensable openings as in the kitchen and bathroom but continuing to propose a mostly hermetic volumetry. The proposal develops the habitat as the main architectural model, however, the assignment posed a need not always involved in this typology; an intermediate privacy space where a second intermittent user will be incorporated.

Cities around the world are facing new questions of urban flight. As the COVID pandemic spread, it exacerbated a range of living conditions and housing crises, from telecommuting and construction to global economies. With the possibility of the pandemic stretching on for years, more urbanites are considering the move to rural areas and small towns. As part of the week-long Cabin Fever program, students from 65 universities around the world were given the opportunity to build seven contemporary timber cabins in a nomadic, lush countryside, mentored by international architects. As a result of the week-long effort, the rural area was transformed into a cutting-edge working village featuring cabins on wheels, cabins on stilts, and multi-story homes. In spite of their apparent simplicity, small cabins have always been a welcome design challenge in which scale, materiality and habitability must be resolved in order to take maximum advantage of minimal spaces. Perhaps the most famous exercise in cabin design, the Le Corbusier-designed 16m2 cabanon was a container of ideas in which the Swiss architect explored the "modulor"-- an understanding of the fundamentality of human scale. In the ensuing half-century, many prominent architects have ventured into cabin design both experimentally and at a primitive level, especially as a small refuge in harmony within a natural context. Text description provided by the architects. Little Black Cabin is a one-bedroom, one-bathroom, bespoke small space that is luxurious and peaceful. The year-old cottage was salvaged, restored, and transformed from a dilapidated shack into a luxurious and highly crafted architectural cabin. At 28 sqm, the cabin is one of the most unique, bespoke projects in the Blue Mountains. An insulated skin of Shou Sugi Ban wraps the existing cottage to provide protection against the elements and bushfire attacks. The bricks have been recycled and repurposed on the site to rebuild the foundations for the cabin and combined with recycled concrete blocks to terrace the step site and integrate gardens. Little Black Cabin is an award-winning getaway located in the charming town of Blackheath designed and built by Smith Architects.

Whether it is by reimagining the aesthetics of the cabin, utilizing advanced fabrication techniques to modernize the rustic, or even reconfiguring the log cabin for the city setting, architects and designers have utterly transformed traditional cabin architecture for a more contemporary existence. Below, we consider 10 innovative cabins that achieve this transformation through experiments with different materials and construction technologies. While each explore different strategies and functions, many share similarities in their use of prefabrication systems , their dedication to sustainability, and their close attention to and optimization of specific material properties. Berlin-based hospitality tech start-up Raus has collaborated with Danish designer and architect Sigurd Larsen to create nature-inspired cabins in the middle of nature. The small retreats are designed with eco-friendly features, offering city dwellers the opportunity to escape the bustling city life, and stay in a chalet that combines art, culture, and nature. The cabin will be temporarily located on the grounds of Wehrmuehle in Biesenthal, Brandenburg , and will soon expand beyond Germany and its borders. Text description provided by the architects. The Lake Tahoe Cabins is comprised of three discrete structures that traverse the rugged and complex Crystal Bay shoreline. The individual structures are linked by a glazed bridge whose footprint kinks precisely around a mass of pre-historic Sierra granite. The unique arrangement of cabins creates recreational alcoves before approaching the lake. On the second level, the great room and kitchen expand the entire east-facing facade. On the lake-facing side, the great room spills into an equally grand balcony with breathtaking views.
