To assist job seekers in their search, we have grouped our approximately 3, job classifications into the 22 major occupational groups listed below. These 22 groups, or job families, were developed by the federal government as a way to standardize the terminology to describe work across the nation — both in government and the private sector — based on similarities of the work performed, and sometimes on the skills, education, and training needed to perform the work. Click on a job group below for examples of the types of jobs in that category. A typing certification is required when applying for clerical positions for State civil service. The specific typing requirement for the classification will be noted in the Class Specification. State departments will honor typing certificates issued within the last four years, certified from a five 5 minute typing test, with a minimum of 40 WPM words per minute that meet CalHR requirements. The State of California provides reinstatement eligibility for some former state employees if you separated from your position by resignation; service retirement; absence without leave AWOL ; accepting another civil service or exempt appointment without a break in continuity of State service; or termination from a limited-term, temporary, Career Executive Assignment, or exempt appointment to which you were subsequently appointed without a break in service.
