Calibrate zwift on:. Wahoo KICKR series of smart trainers all require to be calibrated for power accuracy when riding indoors.
Most smart trainers have their own spin-down calibration protocol which can normally be accessed and carried out using an accompanying app. This is always worth doing when first setting up your trainer, if you move it, change the set-up or every week or so. Temperature is the probably the biggest variable that needs accounting for and, in the same way you warm-up, so too does your trainer. To have confidence in your data, especially if your trainer is in a cold garage or shed, you need to do your warm-up and then perform a spin-down calibration. Log-in and do your usual warm-up - for both you and your trainer, this should be at least 10 minutes.

Essentially, auto calibration is the same as a manual spindown calibration… it just happens automatically every time you coast. So whenever you supertuck down a hill, or hop off your bike to hit the loo between your warmup and race, the Zwift Hub will calibrate itself, optimizing power readings automagically. One Zwift Hub advantage is its direct integration with the Companion app. It just works. For example, in this Zwift Fondo ride I took a short break at two different times, hoping to trigger an auto calibration. For everyone else on older versions, Zwift began rolling out 4. Most Zwifters realize that smart trainers are complex, expensive electronic devices which require calibration and properly-functioning firmware in order to operate properly. Yet many riders have never calibrated their smart trainer or checked for updated firmware! For all but a few smart trainers including the Tacx Neo line, the new Wahoo KICKR 5 , and most smartbikes calibration is necessary to ensure power readings are accurate. Firmware is the code which tells the trainer how to operate — updates typically result in increased power accuracy, more stable operation, and a better overall ride experience. Smart trainers and power meters are improving in terms of accuracy and reliability as the technology matures, and I think the vast majority of Zwifters enjoy acceptably accurate power numbers today. Additionally, other riders may be using uncalibrated trainers or trainers with known accuracy issues. The only way to test the accuracy of your power numbers precisely is to compare them with a power meter you know is completely accurate. The easiest way to approximate your FTP is to look at your solo outdoor efforts on a flat stretch of paved road. Ideally, you would do a one-hour out and back effort on the flattest roads possible with as little wind as possible. Many riders will be significantly lower than at this phase, especially if you are an older rider. Pro male riders often have FTPs in the mid to high s, but these are genetically-gifted experts who have been training hard for hours per day, for years on end. I hope this helps some folks out!
