Raising Cane's, which was founded in Louisiana in by Todd Graves and Craig Silvey, has more than locations across 31 states , but there are none in New York City, where I live. However, in Austin, there are Raising Cane's restaurants all over the city, including one location that was a short drive away from my hotel in south Austin. Despite living in the South for a few years , I've never been to a Raising Cane's before, so I decided to see what all the hype was about — and try the chain's famous chicken tenders and sauce. The drive-thru was busy when I got there, but I planned to order inside anyway. After making my way to the ordering counter, I looked around the restaurant. I was there at lunchtime, so it was filled with people. There was an area for pickup orders, however, for people who don't want to eat inside the restaurant or use the drive-thru.

At the time, Graves worked at Guthrie's Chicken Fingers. The business plan was rejected numerous times by potential investors, so Graves and Silvey earned the needed money working various manual labor jobs. In , Raising Cane's sued a shopping center in Hobart, Indiana , because Cane's had missed discovering, before they had signed a long-term lease, that the shopping center had a non-compete agreement with McDonald's that prohibited other vendors selling boneless chicken products in the complex.
