As a Danish prince, Cnut won the throne of England in in the wake of centuries of Viking activity in northwestern Europe.

The series sees the impending unification of England during the Anglo-Saxon period, and it features protagonist Uhtred of Bebbanburg played by Alexander Dreymon. The Last Kingdom was inspired by a few pivotal events in Anglo-Saxon history, including the Dane-Saxon conflict and the unification of all the kingdoms of England. However he remained in close contact with his Danish friends and allies, and he was the foster cousin of Cnut. He wanted to remain true to his pagan ways, and he believed Uhtred was becoming a hindrance, with the warrior fighting against Cnut in numerous battles.
