Captain America is the character who gave Marvel a chance in the Golden Age. DC was on the top of the superhero world back then, but Captain America's debut got Marvel, then called Timely Publications, the break they needed to be competitive. Since then, Captain America has been Marvel's top hero, leading the heroes into battle against Marvel's most powerful and deadly foes. Captain America has been able to hold his own against everyone, despite the rather nebulous nature of his abilities. Captain America's Super Soldier serum allowed Steve Rogers to become a soldier but exactly which enhancements it gave him have always been up in the air.

The character first appeared in Captain America Comics 1, published on December 20, , by Timely Comics , a corporate predecessor to Marvel. Captain America's civilian identity is Steve Rogers , a frail man enhanced to the peak of human physical perfection by an experimental " super-soldier serum" after joining the United States Army to aid the country's efforts in World War II. Equipped with an American flag -inspired costume and a virtually indestructible shield , Captain America and his sidekick Bucky Barnes clashed frequently with the villainous Red Skull and other members of the Axis powers. In the final days of the war, an accident left Captain America frozen in a state of suspended animation until he was revived in modern times. He resumes his exploits as a costumed hero and becomes leader of the superhero team the Avengers , but frequently struggles as a "man out of time" to adjust to the new era. The character quickly emerged as Timely's most popular and commercially successful wartime creation upon his original publication, though the popularity of superheroes declined in the post-war period and Captain America Comics was discontinued in The character saw a short-lived revival in before returning to comics in , and has since remained in continuous publication. Captain America's creation as an explicitly anti-Nazi figure was a deliberately political undertaking: Simon and Kirby were stridently opposed to the actions of Nazi Germany and supporters of U. The Captain America of the comics was meant to be the pinnacle of human achievement, with a heroic heart and athletic physique. However, there are several instances in the movies which suggest the MCU Captain America has superpowers, including enhanced strength and stamina. Created by comics' legends Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, the Steve Rogers of the comics was meant to be a more realistic hero that ordinary children could aspire to be like. Much like DC Comics' Batman, the Steve Rogers of the comics is highly trained, but has no intrinsic abilities that mark him as more than human. While the Super Soldier Serum transformed Steve Rogers into a peak human athlete, it did not give him any powers beyond those which any soldier could reach with time and training. The process which enhanced the MCU Steve Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger was a scientific miracle, but it was not clearly intended to give him bulletproof skin, superspeed or anything that would be considered a superpower. If it were, the American government would not have bothered investing in an expensive vibranium shield to protect their first Super Soldier, even if he also turned it into an effective weapon.

Marvel Studios' expansion of the MCU in the wake of the Infinity Saga's conclusion meant that more stingers and cliffhangers were used than ever before. Conversely, some of Phase 4's loose ends would rather be forgotten, but Marvel Studios has already given one an easy fix. While bringing down the dangerous Flag Smashers, however, another villain presented herself, as Emily VanCamp's Sharon Carter was revealed as the mysterious Power Broker, a figure of immense influence in Madripoor. Sharon Carter being outed as the Power Broker in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was a controversial and confusing twist, but Marvel Studios has the perfect opportunity to rectify this strange story. Marvel Studios' reveal that Sharon Carter is the Power Broker was an unusual choice that seemed completely out of the ordinary for her character. While she was thought dead after Thanos' Infinity War snap, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier revealed that Sharon Carter had survived, and had built her own criminal empire in Madripoor. Since this evolution didn't make sense, and saw Marvel Studios receive criticism for transforming the otherwise-liked Sharon Carter into a confusing villain, the Power Broker could go the way of Crossbones in the MCU. While removing Sharon Carter from the MCU completely would be a shame, the fact that she has become a villain means that she needs to be eliminated. Killing her off in the opening of Captain America: Brave New World would get Sam Wilson's Captain America off to a strong start, while also creating a void that a more honest-to-goodness Power Broker successor could fill, perhaps Curtiss Jackson and the Corporation from Marvel Comics.
