When I was on a train travelling through Denmark, I saw a little girl. She had very blonde hair and pointy eyes like an elf. She was colouring and sticking while she chatted non-stop her parents were trying very, very hard to read their books. When I got home from my trip I drew her as I remembered her in a little dress with trousers underneath. Then I tried to think of a story that would work with her character. When searching through my notebook, I found the beginnings of a story. It was about two brothers — the younger one was a very, very picky eater and the older one was going to imaginative lengths to persuade him to try just one bite. My older sister was my ally and used to dispose of my food in a handkerchief when my parents turned their backs. Somehow this felt like the right story for the little Danish girl and somehow it felt right that she would have a loyal older brother. I always wanted a brother though I doubt he would have been as nice as Charlie. I called him Charlie because I have always liked the name and made him seven because it is one of my favourite ages. They are like a double act and are both equally important. I never think of Lola as precocious and certainly not bratish — I think she is one of those children who is just very curious and has quite a strong sense of self. The name Lola has a nice sing-song sound to it and seemed the right name for this little character. Why tomatoes?

Overall, I enjoyed this book.

The Running Gag of Lola taking the phrase "hop into bed" literally. She pretends that she has to feed some tigers, that there are whales in the bath, that a lion ate her toothbrush and when Charlie points out that it's still there, she says, "I suppose he must've been using yours, then! Rather than argue, Charlie just plays along. Charlie: "The dogs say that the pyjamas would look better on you. When Sizzles goes missing, then he and an identical dog shows up, the girls sum it up as, "He sort of went for a walk without his lead, and then he wasn't just one, he was two Sizzleses, so now we're not sure if Sizzles is Sizzles anymore! In "Snow is My Favourite and My Best", Charlie tries to cheer Lola who was sad that it was no longer snowing up by saying that snow wouldn't be special if it snowed every day. He asks how she'd feel if she had a party every day

I think I like the book more having seen the series first, knowing how Charlie and Lola "speak" and reading the story with their accents in my mind. The illustration, as with all my picture books, is collage, but compared to much of my work, the Charlie and Lola pictures are quite pared back and the overall look is cleaner and clearer. As a note, this is an awesome reminder that picture books also must be fun, even when you're trying to teach something or impart a certain message. Soren, the boy in the T shirt, had a little sister called Sofie who would follow him around and would always want to do what Soren was doing.

Charlie and Lola is a brilliant animated educational TV series for younger children. It focuses on the relationship between the two main brother and sister characters and how they deal with all the problems, enjoyment and other issues that crop up on an everyday basis. The series has inspired some particularly good Charlie and Lola games, toys and other merchandise such as books, DVDs and pyjamas.

I knew a girl who had a much younger sister — perhaps she was four, maybe five. I can ultimately relate to both characters, Charlie and Lola, because I typically stay up all night, or try to at least, and usually am not tired until 11 o' clock, not 6, like Lola. Charlie then says that it is time to brush their teeth but Lola tells him that she cannot do so for a lion is eating her toothbrush! I understand this pain well.
