Editor's note: The below contains spoilers for Season 3 of The Mandalorian. In the end, the group defeats the beast and brings the foundling back to their covert. For Paz, this is an enormous relief, as he reveals Ragnar is his son. We saw Ragnar being inducted into Clan Vizsla in the Season 3 premiere, " The Apostate ," but there was no indication of him being Paz's son. Now, this new piece of information helps us make sense of the whole Mandalorian social and power structures. Rescuing Ragnar is important not only for Paz but for all the covert, as his clan is one of the oldest and more traditional in Mandalore, and he is now their heir. Once mighty, the Vizslas ruled over all of Mandalore in the distant past, but, over the centuries, they lost most of their power, but still retain their influence, and are as proud as ever of their heritage.

Perhaps the most notorious member of Clan Vizsla was the brutal soldier Tor Vizsla. Pre Vizsla held an ambition to restore the glory of the Vizsla clan that had faded through the years, and make the name a feared one again. Tor Vizsla was a brutal, and barbaric soldier whose dreams of becoming Mand'alor and returning the Mandalorians to their conquering ways were dashed by the ascension of fellow Mandalorian, Jaster Mereel, to the position. Mereel's attempts to return a sense of honor to the increasingly dishonorable Mandalorian mercenaries was met with objection from Tor, who gathered to him a group of like-minded warriors who had enjoyed their lives of unaccountability prior to Mereel's claim to the title of Mand'alor. Years later, however, Tor would meet the same fate courtesy of Jaster Mereel's adopted son, Jango Fett, who hunted Tor to Corellia and left the wounded Death Watch leader to be killed by a pack of dire-cats following a lengthy fight. Pre Vizsla grew up in an era of Mandalorian history wherein the peaceful New Mandalorians were the dominant faction, but Pre yearned for the New Mandalorians' downfall and a return to the widespread warrior ways of the past. In secret, however, he despised Kryze, her government, and everything they stood for, leading the Death Watch against those he considered to be a disgrace to all Mandalorians. Pre revealed himself and his intentions during a battle with the Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi , and tried to kill the Duchess as part of a Separatist -backed plot to take over control of Mandalore from the New Mandalorians. Overthrowing Duchess Kryze, Vizsla betrayed his Sith allies but was killed by Maul in a confrontation.

We know the Star Wars galaxy is full of legends and myths, and one of the most entertaining aspects of a rich world is seeing how the characters of the movies and TV shows - most of them myths-in-the-making themselves - talk about the past. Tarre Vizsla himself hasn't been referred to a lot so far, his only mentions so far being in The Book of Boba Fett episode, " Return of the Mandalorian " and very briefly in the animated series Star Wars Rebels , but his legacy is the foundation for most of the Mandalorian culture's cultish ways, and the reason they are such bellicose people. Something that is key when understanding Mandalorian culture is that they aren't usually very friendly.
