Cosmere

Brandon Winn Sanderson born December 19, is an American author of high fantasy and science fiction. He is best known for the Cosmere fictional universecosmere, in which most of his fantasy novels, most notably the Mistborn series and The Stormlight Archive cosmere, are set. Outside of the Cosmere, he has written several young adult and juvenile series including The Reckoners cosmere, the Skyward series, cosmere, [a] and the Alcatraz series. Sanderson has created several graphic novel fantasy series, including White Cosmere and Dark One.

The Cosmere Series. The Cosmere is the greater universe in which The Stormlight Archive and all other Brandon Sanderson's adult fiction books take place. That is, each book he writes is set on a unique world, and each of these worlds is set in the same Cosmere. All of the books share a single creation myth, a single cosmology and are connected by an overarching story. Book 1.

The shared "creation myth" of the cosmere revolves around Adonalsium , the power of creation, which was broken into sixteen pieces called Shards in an event known as the Shattering of Adonalsium. The Shards are effectively gods, and magic is derived from their power. When someone in the cosmere dies, their body remains in the Physical Realm and a Cognitive Shadow forms in the Cognitive Realm.

The cosmere is the greater universe - a dwarf galaxy [1] - in which The Stormlight Archive - and many of Brandon Sanderson 's other adult fiction books - take place. The books take place on different Shardworlds , and each of these worlds is set in the same small galaxy within the cosmere. Brandon has said that one does not need any cosmere knowledge to understand the books, and that they can be enjoyed separately, but it will be necessary eventually to have a certain understanding of Realmatic Theory. Elements of the cosmere are slowly being added into the books, behind the scenes, until they come into the forefront with Dragonsteel and the final Mistborn trilogy. While he was selling his initial works to publishers, Brandon was encouraged to write books set in different worlds as opposed to a huge epic fantasy series. That way, if a publisher didn't like one book, said publisher could pitch a different one, which one can't do with a huge fantasy series.

This idea came from Sanderson's desire to create an epic-length series without requiring readers to buy a ridiculous number of books. Because of that, he hides connections to his other works within each book, creating this "hidden epic". He has estimated that the Cosmere sequence could conclude with at least 40 books. The story of the Cosmere is about a mysterious being called Adonalsium, who existed on a world known as Yolen. Adonalsium was killed by a group of sixteen conspirators, causing its power to shatter into sixteen different Shards, each of which bears immense power. The sixteen people then took these Shards and traveled to new worlds, populating them with different systems of magic. In one case, the Shards Ruin and Preservation worked together to actually create a planet and its people Scadrial, as featured in Mistborn. Each Shard has an Intent, such as Ambition or Honor, and a Vessel's personality is changed over time to bring them more in-line with their Intent.
