W hich Lawrence to choose? Lady Chatterley's Lover is arguably the most influential, and certainly the most famous, or notorious. But much of it now seems embarrassing. Sons and Lovers , his unforgettable third novel, is many readers' favourite, but I've chosen The Rainbow , the more perfect twin of the diptych that also contains Women in Love. No question: Lawrence is uneven, and troubling.

David Herbert Lawrence 11 September — 2 March was an English novelist, short story writer, poet and essayist. His modernist works reflect on modernity , social alienation and industrialization, while championing sexuality, vitality and instinct. Several of his novels, Sons and Lovers , The Rainbow , Women in Love , and Lady Chatterley's Lover , were the subject of censorship trials for their radical portrayals of sexuality and use of explicit language. Lawrence's opinions and artistic preferences earned him a controversial reputation; he endured contemporary persecution and public misrepresentation of his creative work throughout his life, much of which he spent in a voluntary exile that he described as a "savage enough pilgrimage". Forster , in an obituary notice, challenged this widely held view, describing him as "the greatest imaginative novelist of our generation". Leavis also championed both his artistic integrity and his moral seriousness. The fourth child of Arthur John Lawrence, a barely literate miner at Brinsley Colliery , and Lydia Beardsall, a former pupil-teacher who had been forced to perform manual work in a lace factory due to her family's financial difficulties, [3] Lawrence spent his formative years in the coal mining town of Eastwood , Nottinghamshire. The house in which he was born, 8a Victoria Street, is now the D. Lawrence Birthplace Museum. His working-class background and the tensions between his parents provided the raw material for a number of his early works. Lawrence roamed out from an early age in the patches of open, hilly country and remaining fragments of Sherwood Forest in Felley woods to the north of Eastwood , beginning a lifelong appreciation of the natural world, and he often wrote about "the country of my heart" [4] as a setting for much of his fiction. Even at his peak, Lawrence was considered as crude and smut writer. However, puritanical morality aside, Lawrence was an incredible writer. Not only was he a superb prose writer, he was also exceptionally versatile and was noted for his mastery of a wide range of topics. Beyond that, however, Lawrence is capable of transferring life into the pages of his book. His subtle, yet complex interpretation of life, love, sex, psychology and politics were expertly weaved into a stark reflection of middle class England of early 20th century.
