Its purpose is to produce intense beams of light whose special characteristics are useful in many areas of scientific research. In particular it can be used to investigate the structure and properties of a wide range of materials from proteins to provide information for designing new and better drugs , and engineering components such as a fan blade from an aero-engine [1] to conservation of archeological artifacts for example Henry VIII 's flagship the Mary Rose [2] [3]. There are more than 50 light sources across the world. The Diamond synchrotron is the largest UK-funded scientific facility to be built in the UK since the Nimrod proton synchrotron which was sited at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in It replaced the Synchrotron Radiation Source , a second-generation synchrotron at the Daresbury Laboratory in Cheshire. Diamond produced its first user beam towards the end of January , and was formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 19 October

Iconic in design, Diamond Light Source is the world-leading synchrotron is 10, times more powerful than a standard microscope. Used for both academic and industrial research, this stadium-sized machine is the only one of its kind in the UK. What is it? Diamond Light Source is a world-leading medium energy synchrotron facility producing high intensity x-rays. It works like a giant microscope, harnessing the power of electrons to produce intensely bright light that scientists can use to study anything from fossils to jet engines, viruses to vaccines. How does it work? The machine works by accelerating electrons to near light speeds, so they give off a light 10 billion times brighter than the sun. Here, scientists use the light to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments to innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology. Who can use it? Over 14, researchers from across life and physical sciences both from academia and industry use Diamond to conduct experiments, assisted by approximately staff. The synchrotron is free at the point of access through a competitive application process, provided that the results are published in the public domain. Diamond is one of the most advanced scientific facilities in the world, and its pioneering capabilities are helping to keep the UK at the forefront of scientific research.

This will be a transformational upgrade that will enable a huge expansion of UK science capabilities as it involves a coordinated programme of development combining state-of-the-art technology in a new machine, five new flagship beamlines and a comprehensive series of upgrades to its Instruments. This was followed by several years as a senior projects advisor in central government where he was involved in, and delivered, nationwide policy projects as well as helping to develop the programme delivery framework for government. Additionally, he helped to set up the national programme office structure for Highways England and ran two busy Project Management Offices. Rob joined Diamond Light Source from Sellafield Ltd where he focused on raising the standards of the programme delivery framework, which included the appointment and development of the SRO Senior Responsible Officer function for major projects of national interest.
