Thanks so much for clarifying the difference between usal and misal. On my recent visit to Pune,my host served misal pav and I said that it difference between usal and misal just like sev- usal of Gujarat, to which she said that usal and misal were two different dishes and she couldn't tell the difference!! So thank you so much for this post.

Difference between usal and misal
It consists of Misal a spicy curry usually made of sprouted moth beans and Pav a type of Indian bread. The final dish is topped with farsan , sev , onions , lemon and fresh coriander. It can be served as breakfast dish as a snack and also as a full meal. Misal is known for its high spice content. Dahi Misal is another type of misal where beaten yogurt is topped on the misal before serving. There is a difference between Usal and Misal. Usal is a curried dish made with sprouted legumes or mixed sprouts. The main ingredient is Goda Masala that gives authentic taste to the Usal. Goda masala is the base for most Maharashtrian dishes. Goda masala is spiced powder , which is made of whole garam masala spices and dried coconut. It can be prepared well in advance and stored in air-tight containers. Both Misal and Usal can be eaten with Pav. Usually people mix these two according to their taste and requirement. Top with the coriander and chopped onions. Serve the usal with lemon wedges and ladi pav.
