The Doctor has been fighting the Cybermen ever since the final days of his first incarnation. Originally introduced on 's "The Tenth Planet," the Cybermen are Doctor Who's ultimate sci-fi body horror monsters. Once human, the Cybermen upgraded themselves, replacing human flesh with cybernetics and removing all emotions to become uniform, unfeeling, calculating cyborgs, set upon converting all humanity into Cybermen. However, just one year later in , "The Tomb of the Cybermen" would claim the icy world of Telos was in fact their home. While 's "Attack of the Cybermen" claimed the Telosian Cybermen were in fact colonizers from Mondas, other accounts suggested the Cybermen started on Telos and then colonized Mondas, or even developed independently on the two worlds.

They varied greatly in design between numerous different Cyber-subspecies , and originated independently through parallel evolution from various locations across time , space and universes , including Mondas , Telos , Planet 14 , Marinus , a Mondasian colony ship , the Earths of the Doctor's universe and " Pete's World ", and at least one other parallel universe. Eventually Mondas disintegrates from absorbing too much energy. The Cybermen left on Earth collapse and die as they rely on the energy from Mondas. The Doctor, Jamie, Polly and Ben arrive on the moon in AD where the moonbases weather control stations crew have come under attack from a black-veined virus. The bases medic was the first person to be contaminated by the virus so only the Doctor can help find the cause. The Cybermen created the virus to control the humans. The Doctor, Jamie and Victoria arrive on the planet Telos.
