For the first few seasons of the Showtime hit "Shameless," Karen Jackson is Lip Gallagher's Jeremy Allen White promiscuous and extremely on-again, off-again girlfriend. Karen tries to take care of her agoraphobic mother Sheila Joan Cusack , but she also has a manipulative streak which makes her treat the lovestruck Lip pretty badly. First, she sleeps with his dad, Frank William H. Macy , who is also Sheila's boyfriend at the time. Lip turns out to not be the father, but Karen also doesn't want the child, Hymie, either. Sheila ends up raising it, and Karen runs away from home.

Finally, "A Long Way From Home" ends with Fiona not only becoming the other legal guardian to her siblings, but Karen returns after her son had been taken away by his father's mother. Then with Frank The Plumber , Karen is hit by a speeding car driven by Mandy and being left for dead, after being lured out by a false text message sent by Mandy. Also Mickey and Ian break-up. The drama continues in the penultimate episode of season 3. Season 4's "There's The Rub": Liam accidentally ingests cocaine left out during a party, and Fiona is later arrested. The season 4 finale "Lazarus": Jimmy turns out to be alive, only he's going by Jack now, and he is seen being driven past the Gallagher home. This was a surprise even to most of the cast, who had no idea Justin Chatwin even showed up to shoot this scene. Season 5's "A Night to Remem Wait, What? Season 6's "NSFW": Carl's hoodlum life and friendship with Nick comes to an abrupt, disturbing end when Nick kills a young boy for stealing his bike.

Sammi's departure was great for the show because it removed her in a way that didn't denigrate the character but still freed viewers from her. Nancy M. Lip catches up with Karen as she leaves; he informs her that if she goes through with running away, she will regret the decision in the future. Karen reveals that the father is probably her classmate, Timmy Wong , and refuses to even hold the child. After escaping, Monica runs away, informing Debbie that the family would be better without her sticking around. When the adoptive parents don't want Karen's baby because of his disability, Sheila and Jody steal the baby from the maternity ward to ensure he has a better future.
