Today, we dive into the life and career of another: Don Mattingly. Donnie Baseball was an all-around star for the Yankees , in a tenure that was mostly filled with disappointment for the team as a whole. The Yankees could never quite build around their star first baseman, though he can boast a shelf full of personal awards, as well as the admiration of a fan base. As the youngest of five children, Don tagged along with his older siblings, including to neighborhood baseball and Wiffle ball games. Mattingly attended Reitz Memorial High School in Evansville, and stood out among the competition as a three-sport athlete. He starred on the football field and the basketball court, but it would become more and more evident that he was destined for greatness on the diamond. He helped lead Reitz Memorial to a game win streak at one point, which included a state championship. Mattingly had committed to play baseball at Indiana State University, which of course, dropped his draft stock as teams assumed he would elect to hold that commitment. In the 19th round of the Draft, however, the Yankees took a chance and selected the ambidextrous high school star.

Mattingly graduated from Reitz Memorial High School in Evansville, Indiana , and was selected by the Yankees in the amateur draft. Debuting with the Yankees in after four seasons in Minor League Baseball , he emerged as the Yankees' starting first baseman after a successful rookie season in He served as captain of the Yankees from through , when he retired as a player.
