Dragons are immensely powerful creatures, and the magic they possess emanates outward, influencing everything around them. The latest sourcebook, Fizban's Treasury of Dragons , introduces items capable of absorbing the power of a dragon's hoard, causing hidden powers to emerge. What these magical items are capable of is entirely dependent on the age of the dragon and its hoard, with the most ancient of dragons awakening incredible powers within them. They can also grow dormant if they are not attuned and active or left steeping in the dragon's hoard, losing power over time a they return to slumber. Magical hoard items exist in four states: slumbering, stirring, awakened and ascendant. The potential of their power is dependent upon the age and power of the dragon rather than simply the time the item spends in the hoard. Even slumbering items have certain base properties and may even possess a minute amount of power, though greater power can be awakened if the item is left to steep in a dragon's hoard for at least one year. As for how age affects these items, young dragons stir power and dormant properties.
