Here we have gathered our list of absolute, must-read manga classics. In order for a manga to be considered a classic, it has to have impacted either the literary landscape or pop culture in some major, long-lasting way. The series' popularity has not waned despite the almost thirty years since its publication. The characters are instantly recognizable, even to people who have never read the manga or seen the anime, and modern series still make references to it. Longevity is also a key factor.

Manga are extremely popular in Japan and are nowadays read by people throughout the globe. However, despite its growing demand world-wide, the industry started and is still focused on Japan. The word manga has a much shorter history of usage when compared to all the notable events that led up to what we know the word to mean today. Manga have a long history and they have changed drastically over the years. There are of course differences, such as that manga have a distinctly different style to comics and are read from right to left instead of left to right. However, modern manga do take a lot of inspiration from the comics that came from the United States after World War II.
