Beautiful cool day with a hike in mix of sun and mostly cloud. Later start precluded getting up all the way to Elk Mountain. Much quieter than I expected on Labor Day. Definitely make your way to the top of Maiden Peak and past that to the wilderness camping area a mile past. Parking at Deer Park TH is limited and the road up is a bit narrow in places. Good trail all the way.

Just a beautiful trail with aspens and cliffs looking onto the creek. You'll go a mile and cross railroad and see old cabin before any posted signs mention Elk Mountain. We continued to Elk Mountain and decided not to go on to obstruction point, elk mountain alltrails.

View is spectacular as always. The last mile is open and hot in the sun and smoke. The fall colors are definitely here in the Valley. I was up here a month ago and there was snow. Ashley Burrough. We left before sunrise and hiked clockwise around the loop, so we got to see the sun rise over the mountain range and hit elk mountain rights as the sun was coming up. Users report that the both the Gloria and Thurston trails are not well maintained, so downloading the offline trail maps can be helpful to follow the correct route.
