Ensaaf

Ensaaf works to end impunity and achieve justice for crimes against humanity in India, with a special focus on Punjab, by documenting abuses, bringing perpetrators ensaaf justice, and ensaaf survivors. The VSC will include an immersive sensory experience, data visualizations, documentary films and oral histories, a portrait gallery, ensaaf, an advocacy interface, a human rights archive, and a resource center. They wanted to build a new audience of younger supporters to help spread awareness about their work and engage with their multimedia content. They also needed some high-level advice on their technology choices. We worked with Ensaaf to choose 6 goals to track within Google Analytics, aligning the team on which numbers are most important to measure and map onto their mission. These goals and critical metrics were built into a customized dashboard that the whole team could receive on a monthly basis. Our Rent-a-CTO services went beyond basic advice and mapped out a step-by-step plan for redesigning their website in the future. Through weekly training sessions, the Ensaaf team came up to speed on all things digital and is now able to use data to take action and increase their impact.

For three decades, the architects of crimes against humanity in Punjab have escaped accountability and justice. While families have searched for their disappeared loved ones and lived with lies and partial-truths, the government of India has rewarded and promoted the perpetrators. We believe that survivors of gross human rights violations cannot live as free and respected citizens of a country until impunity ends. As part of its Virtual Site of Conscience, Ensaaf will create visualizations that will promote accountability and support prosecutions for crimes against humanity in Punjab. The visualizations will identify the commanding officials, as well as the number of individuals unlawfully killed and enforceably disappeared by them and their subordinates. Punjab is a state in northern India. The official language of Punjab is Punjabi. Sometimes, Punjab is referred to as a region, which in addition to including the state of Punjab, encompasses central Pakistan and other parts of India. The Sikh religion was revealed in the 16th Century, in what is today known as the Punjab region located in northern India and Pakistan. The revelations of its founder Guru Nanak and nine successive Gurus preached belief in one God, remembrance of God at all times, equality of all human beings, and the rejection of idolatry, ritualism, caste, and asceticism. In , the 10th Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, created an initiated order of Sikhs, who wear specific articles of faith, making them readily identifiable.
