Ethel and her creator share a lot in common. I see her before she enters the restaurant: From across the street, she fits right into the industrial town she moved into last October, casual in black cargo pants and an oversize crop top with a wolf on it. Her sets are heavy with emotion; fans sometimes leave in tears, feeling intimately connected to the wrenching isolation at the heart of her songs. On social media, they call her Mother and talk about the closeness they feel with her, in an echo of her own origin story.

The year-old singer-songwriter was born to a deacon and a choir singer in a Southern Baptist community. Hers was a childhood of piety, where the softness of her early sense of self was cemented by the crucifix that loomed over her as she slept at night, its image branded into the dark behind her eyes like guilt. Her little world ran to the limits of her conservative hometown along the Florida panhandle, where she was home-schooled her entire life. With her sister, they would dream up stories together, playing in the backyard, running around through the groves with sticks. Under her first moniker, White Silas, in , she would release smatterings of singles and mixtapes on SoundCloud and Tumblr. These projects were a spectre of the sound she has come to define: ethereal and resonant like the Gregorian chants that echo through the cathedral rafters — yet haunting, trapped in a purgatory somewhere between devotion and despair. But at last, we meet Ethel Cain, in glorious technicolour. She feels scared. She has an image to uphold. She has so much to prove and so many things she wants to get away from, but ultimately, she just winds up running a full circle right back into them. I wanted her to be the poster child for what I feel is the casualty of being an All-American girl. The story of Ethel Cain is far from over: since its genesis, she has nurtured the ambition of writing it into a novel and, eventually, a screenplay which she will ultimately direct.

Midday light beams in through stained glass, illuminating a realm that, depending on where you look, could belong to an ancient church lady or a ghoulish goth teen. A crucifix hangs on one wall, a rip saw on another. A Holy Bible sits next to a thrift-store novel about a mass murderer called Shadow of Cain. All of the furniture looks at least a hundred years old, and haunted. She then steps through a doorway into an open space with even more stained glass and pews and an altar.

Dialling in from Los Angeles on Halloween morning, she looks relaxed and low-key, wearing a camo long-sleeve shirt with her straight brown hair tucked behind her ears. With her forehead tattoos and ghostly frocks, Cain does seem like the perfect muse for the spooky holiday. Inbred started off as a very dreamy, synth-y EP. I just feel that being trans is the least interesting thing about me. Cain was born on March 24, , in Tallahassee, Florida , and was raised in Perry. Ryan Cassata has been representing the transgender community in the music industry for over a decade. I cannot deny that the ways that I experience life will be vastly different from anyone who's not a trans woman. Cain came out as gay to her family at the age of 12, and on her 20th birthday, she publicly came out as a trans woman : "As I got older, I found out there were other options", she said.
