Free companies are player-run organizations which allow their members to pool resources, be it items or gil, to accomplish feats that would be difficult or impossible for a single individual. The benefits of joining a free company include a dedicated chat channel for all members, the ability to purchase an estate to serve as the group's base of operations, and the use of free company actions that grant bonuses such as increased experience points. No two free companies share the same goals and motivations, so be sure to choose the free company that's right for you. Linkshells and cross-world linkshells are chat groups which allow for quick and easy communication between players who are not necessarily in a party or free company. Unlike free companies, players are able to join multiple linkshells, making it possible to join different communities dedicated to various aspects of the game. Teamwork is key, so be sure to find a team with whom you're confident you can hone your skills together.

But nothing could have prepared them for the calamitous arrival of the Seventh Umbral Era. Dalamud's descent upon the battlefield triggered the release of Bahamut, an elder primal seething with rage from eons of imprisonment. Bahamut's wrath cost the Grand Companies countless troops, and of those who survived, many reportedly deserted the battlefield. When the dust of the Calamity had settled, it became apparent that consolidating the strength of the Grand Companies was imperative. The resurgence of the Garlean threat could not be ignored; the Grand Companies needed to replenish their troops to ensure the safety of the realm. And so, in an effort to bolster their forces and encourage the cooperation of adventurers, the Eorzean Alliance sanctioned the creation of free companies—mercenary groups that would serve as an extension of the Grand Companies. Both established and operated by adventurers, these new organizations require little if any contribution from the Grand Companies to sustain them. Moreover, their contracts are formed on an individual basis, making the assembly of troops against opposing threats swift and efficient. By the decree of the council of the Alliance leadership, adventurers are now free to lend their aid to any Grand Company, transferring their allegiance as they please, and as a result, provide the Alliance with the manpower it needs. As the forces that threaten Eorzea continue to grow, the policies of this new system will allow adventurers to undertake such duties as transcend political boundaries.

Free companies are independent player-operated organizations, not unlike guilds. While there are no restrictions on who may join a company, players cannot belong to more than one free company at a time. To form a company, a player must first draft a petition and then get three other players to sign it. These three players will become the founding members of the company. Players can apply to join a free company from the free company's profile page. The application can be reviewed by selecting "Free Company" under "Social" from the main menu. The application can also be withdrawn from this window.

Like many other MMORPGs on the market, Final Fantasy 14 makes use of Free Companies guilds as a way for players to come together and knock out some of the more challenging content in the game or simply create a community to hang out. But, in typical Final Fantasy 14 fashion, Square Enix has taken things a step further and implemented ranks for the Free Companies and a way to increase rank.
