The engine braking feature is a useful add-on for customers that tow often or folks that drive down mountain grades. The feature is active when the following conditions are met: in gears , engine rpm above rpm, and foot off the accel pedal. While the engine braking is active the turbo vanes are closed more to create higher back pressure in the exhaust manifold. This makes it harder to push exhaust out and that force acts on the pistons to help slow the vehicle down. This helps to reduce the need for vehicle brakes and reduces wear on the brake hardware. The feature not active in normal driving conditions. This is a very useful feature for vehicles doing a lot of short trips to drive a bit longer when the regen needs to happen to prevent DPF plugging issues in the field.

BTW, my GDE tuned Ram's tailpipes are still shiny after , miles, guess the old "non approved" tune wasn't so dirty. To the original poster what year truck do you have, it is going to make a difference in what you want to do, if you have a new Ram with the GEN3 ecodiesel then you are out of luck at the moment as I don't know of any true tunes available for it yet, they are being worked on but none that I know of have been completed and are ready for release.
I am just looking for some clarity. Peace of mind, gde tune. I see 2 tunes listed on the GDE website.

Cylinder pressure measuring equipment is vital to calibrating correctly for optimum results. We are a team with numerous years experience working in the diesel calibration field. We utilize a full spectrum approach to optimize the combustion cycle for burn rates, peak firing pressure and thermal management. The results are lowest fuel consumption per a given load and minimized emissions. To determine the overall power-torque curve to meet the performance requirements, and from that point begin optimizing the calibration as a whole to provide the highest fuel economy lowest BSFC and performance. This involves running multitudes of test cycles on dyno and trade-off curves. At end of development, the application is tested on EPA emission drive cycles to ensure it is environmental friendly. Then the combustion event is modified to minimize soot formation for cleaner engine internals and improved longevity.
