The often-forgotten prequel to the God of War series, Ascension , came out after the bombastic finale of God of War 3. Kratos is then captured and tortured by the three Furies for breaking his blood oath with Ares. While the God of War reboot that was released in was a massive success both critically and commercially, the series originally had a very different look and tone. Rather than the bearded, viking inspired Kratos of the newest title, the various older games instead featured a leaner, meaner Kratos ripped straight out of Greek mythology. However, it seems God of War: Ascension may have had a very different visual design for Kratos planned if a piece of character concept art is anything to go by. This rendition is meant to show a weak Kratos broken at the hands of the three Furies.

New concept art released today for God of War: Ascension shows some of the game's environments, a lush smattering of grays and warm red hues depicting scenes from intimidating stone buildings and sunlit marketplace alleys. Some of the above artwork shows areas players will pass through in Ascension, from carpet-strewn rooftops to rock walkways cut into the side of cliffs. The red and sandy gold color scheme of God of War is present in each work's coloring, meshing with grey rock, multicolored canopies and steely blue sky. Then, as ideas started to flow, I realized I had no sketchbook — good thing the restaurant had napkins. A vision of Kratos came to me that needed to get out of my head and onto paper or napkin — he had wide double blades attached to his forearms by chains that he would fling around. The napkins soon filled with Kratos flying through the air with double blades. As for the napkin sketches, most of them probably got crumpled in some jean pocket and eaten by the wash… but thankfully, not all of them. I did this piece early in the God of War 1 production, which means we knew Kratos will jump off the cliff at the beginning of the game. What a depressing start of a game!
