All white plumage with black wingtips visible at rest. The pink bill shows a curved base and a prominent black grin patch. Blue morph is the same shape and size as the white morph, with a variably dark body and a white head. Note the curved bill base and the black grin patch on the pink bill. Forages in wide-open spaces, such as cultivated fields and shallow wetlands during the nonbreeding season.

It is one of the largest of all domestic geese breeds and is usually kept for its meat. It lays far fewer eggs than other domestic breeds, typically only yielding around 30 a year. The exact origin of the African Goose is contested, although it is widely accepted that the most likely country of origin is China. It is believed that the African Goose originates from the Chinese Goose, although it has also been theorized that they originated as a cross between the Chinese Goose and the Swan Goose.

It is very dark gray with a high contrast white head and white upperwing patch. Suspected blue morph birds should be carefully scrutinized for signs of hybridization with Snow Goose—most reported blue morph Ross's Geese show hybrid characters like a black grin patch or curved bill base under close inspection. Flocks with other species of geese during the nonbreeding months in shallow wetlands, ponds, and agricultural fields. Juvenile are mostly white with some dusky highlights on the head and back.
